I had two rooms reserved for my party of 6. Walked up to the clerk who asked me for id. I had kept two $20 Bills sandwiched between my credit card and ID. I asked if any upgrades were available and she told me that there is a newely rennovated room in the Venetian tower with a great view of the strip for an $85 upgrade charge. She said she will waive the charge and sure enough, we got the rooms on the 24th floor - with a fantastic view of the strip and the pools below. She tried her best to get the rooms connected without success- in the end it didnt matter as our rooms were just 2 rooms apart.
She also looked at the $40 and said "Thank you for that". I was quite nervous but in the end it worked out just great. I did chat up with her like other people had suggested on this thread, asked her how her day was and such.

I originally booked the room through Priceline at $250 a night. It was only for the Venetian Luxury room (single king). I placed the $20 between my ID and credit card and passed it to the young lady behind the counter. As I the $20 sandwiched between the two cards, I politely asked if she would be able to give me any complimentary upgrades. She noticed the $20, placed the credit card over the $20, then put them down on her desk next to her keyboard. She frantically went to work and found a very nice Venezia Concierge Bella suite( around $400 a night). The room was fantastic, 2 queen beds, 3 LCD TVs and a mini fridge. It was located on the 20th floor with a view of the strip, far down the hall from the elevators, which is a good thing -you don't have to listen to every drunk person stumble loudly to their room late at night. I have stayed in rooms close to the elevators and you hear every single person go by. She also included a coupon book for the Canal shoppes, a free gondola ride, $25 in slot play and late checkout without a problem.
I originally didn't think it was going to work since I booked through Priceline, and another member on the forums said they were unsuccessful in upgrading due to the reservation being made through Priceline. Luckily I was able to get an upgrade and then some. $20 well spent.

I had booked the room through my sister who had blocked off a bunch of basic suites for her wedding. She had negotiated an already reduced rate for us. When we checked in, I put the $20 between my credit card and ID, but it was not visible. When I asked for an upgrade she said it would cost an additional $300. She said there was nothing complimentary. When she saw the $20- she said "let me see what I can do." We couldn't get the $300 updgrade b/c there was only one of those rooms left, but she put us on the 26th floor, newly remodeled room with 3 flat screens and automatic drapes. (kind of stupid but cool). The other members of our group were in old rooms on the 5th floor.

Checked in on a Wednesday afternoon on a Priceline run of house reservation. Got a male reservation clerk in his mid-20's. Sandwiched a $20 between my credit card and driver's license and requested a room with a strip view. The clerk stated that this would be a $45/nite upgrade, to which I politely refused and took my $20 back. After a minute of two of polite conversation the clerk said that he'd keep looking to see what he could do. Ended up with a strip view room in the Venezia tower for my Wednesday-Saturday stay - about an $80/nite upgrade from the base Venetian suite... sounded good to me!

I checked in w/ my Mom at 11:00 am. I'm 34 & she's 60. I walked up & laid my ID, credit card & folded 20 on the counter. I said "I was wondering if there was a complimentary upgrade available? We are celebrating my Mom's 60th b-day this weekend!" We originally ordered 1 king bed, no view, bottom floor. After a lot of typing he started giving us options. He said if we wanted to check in now we would get a newly renovated suite on floor 33 (36 floors in all) w/ 2 beds & a view or we could wait till 3 for an even better suite. We took the the suite on floor 33. I couldn't imagine how it could have been any better. 3 plasma TV's & one was in the bathroom! The view was great too! The clerk was also right next to the manager but that didn't seem to bother him. He asked if I needed change for my 20 & I said no. It was very easy!

Gave her the $20 between the cards. She immediately noticed it and said she would see what she could do. She had to make a call, so it was about a five minute wait, but a room opened up on the 30th floor. Very nice, good view and all the upgrades of the new suites such as automatic drapes, mini bar, flat panel TVs and a DVD player. I am sure that we would have been stuck on a low floor and with an old room had I not given her $20. Worth it!!

I checked in with my wife in tow. When asked for ID and credit card, I put a $20 under both. She took the cards, left the twenty on the counter and just kept typing away. She then asked for me to sign an electronic signature pad verifying the conference rate. No mention of an upgrade at this point, I went ahead and signed the pad. The pad was now partially covering the twenty. She said that we were being upgraded to a Venezia Suite with a strip view. I told her the $20 was for her and she said thanks. The room really had a great view of the Mirage Volcano and the mountains in the distance.
I talked with other folks at the conference and they were on low floors with a view of the back of the Venetian.
On a related note: I tipped the bell hop $5 when we picked up our bags (they were being held for us after checkout). The bell hop had us skip the taxi line (about 20 people) and called the next taxi to pick us up. This worked 2 years ago at the Bellagio as well.

Put the $20 under my credit card, the clerk glanced at it quickly checked his computer said an upgrade was available. Same type of room but in the Venezia tower (claimed it was $45 more a night.) Had a view of the pool area. Once I agreed the $20 quickly went into his pocket.

When the clerk asked for my ID and credit card I handed them over with a folded $20 bill and asked him to upgrade our room if possible. We were put in a room with a king bed on the 33rd floor over looking the strip. Great view, king bed. I paid $140 on Priceline. I feel like if I would have just smiled and asked for an upgrade with out the $20 tip I would have received the same upgrade.

I went to check in at about 12pm, gave my ID with the $20 and my credit card in plain site. She gace me a room with a really low floor, probably a view of a wall. I asked if anything else was available, she said that was it at the moment. I then tapped the credit card with the $20 which she then noticed and said "let me check". She then finds a 29th floor room with a view of the strip which was nice.

$20 under card, she scooped it down to her counter, said she could give us a great room on high floor with a strip view. Room was great, but think we could have got it just by asking/being nice. But it was an official "upgrade" - so it counts. I think the rooms are the best on strip.

Booked a Rialto Suite with view about a week prior to arrival. When I got there, a guy in the late 20s/early 30s helped me. He asked for my name, and confirmed what I booked. At that time, I handed my card over to him (he didn't ask for it yet) with the $20 folded under it, but slightly sticking out so it's visible. He took the card, noticed the $20, and then smiled at me. He set my card down next to the keyboard, and asked if I needed any additional service (woohoo!). I told him that it was my boss's first visit to vegas, and it would be nice if I can give him a good impression if he stayed in a very nice room.
So then he said "I'll see what I can do". After some crazy typing, he told me that if I can wait an hour, there will be a Piazza Suite available, and he can give me that. However, it only had 1 king sized bed. I actually went with a group of 6 people, and we needed at least the 2 queen beds in the Rialto Suite that I booked, so I (reluctantly) told him that I'll stick with the Rialto.
So then he asked if there is anything else he can help me with, then I told him that we will probably need internet access. He said that's not a problem. I also asked for some extra keys. He smiled and typed away. Then it's the usual directions and comments, and we were on our way.
I opened the booklet that I got, he gave me 4 keys. There was also a $30 dollar dining credit notice for Tao Asian Bistro (a $30 dollar meal deduction if we dine at Tao and charge it to the room), a $20 dollar gaming credit notice (redeemable at the cashier), and high-speed internet access (which I always need).
When I was doing video-checkout the next morning, I wasn't charged for the internet access. I didn't use the dining credits.
Overall that was great. $20 got me a much bigger room (1400 sq. ft vs the 1100 sq. ft that I booked). Even though I had to turn it down, I received other bonuses that were awesome.

Got a $129 rate using a code provided on FW for a two nights' stay, during check in handed a 20$ bill folded between licence and credit card. Asked if there were any "complementary upgrades" available. She pocketed the $20, and asked if I would prefer a room with a strip view. Ended up on the 20th floor. Very nice view, especially at night.
Well worth the money.

Bid through Priceline w/ two nights' stay, during check in handed a 20$ bill folded between licence and credit card. Asked for a room w/ strip view and the clerk asked if I needed any change w/ that $20 and I said no. He quickly put the bill in his pocket and quickly found what we asked. Also got some coupons ($25 slot credit, 2 for one spa pass etc.)
Well worth the money.

About Priceline and the Venetian. I tried the $20 upgrade trick when checking in. I was politely told that I had reserved via Priceline and it WAS NOT UPGRADABLE unless I paid another $50 a night. I politely said no and the clerk politely returned my $20 with my room key. I got a room on the same level as the pool with a view of some bushes, the building lights and a wall. Only paid $109 for the beautiful room which is really like a suite so I wasn't unhappy but NO VIEW whatsoever. If your first trip to Vegas get a room with a view and don't use Priceline.
I leave for London and Paris Friday night. Reserved both hotels through Priceline. I'll let yo know what kind of room I get at the London Hilton Metropole and Mercure Paris tour Eiffel Suffren hotels.

I just got back from the Venetian, too. It was only a one night stay, but I used the trick (hoping to get a really really big room - 1400 or 1500). The clerk was discreet but didn't try to hide the folded 20, and upgraded me to an 1100 sq ft suite on the 31st floor, with a view. My reservation was for a smaller suite, without a view, and probably on a much lower floor. I did notice that the desk clerks had supervisors watching them as closely as if they were card dealers so I manueuvered my way to one who was beyond their earshot. One thing that I did differently than you was that I was clear that I was interested in a *complimentary upgrade*. If she would have asked me what the 20 was for, I would have straight up told her that she could keep it if she could find me a complimentary upgrade. If a person is that clueless that they don't know that they're being tipped for special treatment, they're probably not going to catch on after you tell them that the 20 is "for you".

No Dice For Litllam88 at Venetian...
|
|
| |
|
Just came back from the Venetian. I asked the girl during registration if there were any upgrades while handing her my credit card and a folded $20 bill. She said she will check what is available. She saw the $20 and asked what it was for...I said it was for her. She said "thank you" and said she would do the best she could for me.
She quoted me an upgrade for $35 (no comps) I told her "no" and asked if there was anything else. She checked again and said no, but she could give me a room with a partial view. I asked if I could at least have a room with two queens, since I have 3 kids with me...she said that would be an extra $35. I said "no, thank you" and was pretty upset that the $20 tip did nothing. At least I was near the elevators...
