Great room in this hotel, pool excellent offered the tip with ID and she looked a little surprised as we already had a nice suite reserved but still we went from the weekend rate of $300 to a top floor suite worth double. Lovley staff and great experience.

Checked in around 1 a.m. after a long flight. Only one clerk working and she didn't look too friendly. I handed her the sandwich anyway and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. She told me nothing was available and handed me back the $20 with a frown. A little bummed, I opened my room door and found two double beds (we had called twice to request a king) and a messy bathroom. I politely called the manager, who upgraded us to a suite with a view of the strip. Great room, helped make the trip special, and it didn't cost me $20! But I'll try the sandwich tip again next time I go, as I believe I just happened to find a clerk who wasn't in the mood to try.

Checked in around 5pm.. A LOT of people in line (even the worst room here at Tropicana cost 100+), slid the 20 between my DL and credit card with the DL on top. Clerk pulled away the DL saw the cash and looked a bit suprised, but smiled. She quickly asked what room type we reserved (island) and quickly showed us what she could upgrade us to. We accepted. Worked beautifully, and will try again next trip =)

Checked in with my wife. (did the usual protocol) The clerk was really nice and was ready to hook us up with a regular suite.. but when i told her it was my wife and I's 1st anniversary.. and wanted to make it really special, she said she can try to convince her manager to approve a jacuzzi suite for the rest of the weekend, and not just one night. The upgrade, I read, was about $200 a night.. thats $400 up on my first $20 bet!! Good start to the weekend!

Was real busy at check in. We got an older gentleman at the desk, and I handed him my license so he could look up my reservation, and I asked him if he had any comp upgrades as I slid a folded $20 and my cc to him. He shushed me as there was a huge line and his previous customer was still there. He pocketed the $20 and upgraded us to the main tower for 4 nights. It was well worth the extra $20

I had the $20 between the ID and the CC. A manger was saying over her shoulder that everything was full. It was about 8pm. I think it helps sometimes if it's later in the evening as they know what's full. We were upgraded to a 19th floor suite. It was a little dog-eared in places, but we knew that about the trop and loved it. The clerk turned out to be from our home state and had several things in common with us. She was very discreet with the tip and palmed it quickly and quietly. I never even had to ask for the upgrade. It took a lot of typing on her part.

I was not aware of this until reading this today. I was in Vegas 3 weeks ago, and had a reservation at the Tropicana for one of their base Garden Rooms. Upon check in they upgraded me to a Paradise Tower room with a strip view. They did not even tell me that I was upgraded. The same thing has happened to me at Flamingo last October. In both cases I checked in around 11 PM. I'm not trying to say that this does not work, because I am sure the tip really provides a lot of encouragement for the upgrade, but its possible that a small percentage of the upgrades are given due to the time of checkin and availablity of room. In both cases I never asked for the upgrade, nor was I aware that I got an upgrade until I reached my room.

My buddy set up the room and did the transaction while I was at the roulette table. I don't know what the initial cost was, but I do know we went on the cheap and I assume he set up for the garden room (3 nights). He told me that he put a $20 between the ID and CC and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. He deliberately chose the youngest desk clerk, apparently because he looked like more of a pushover. The clerk was eager to oblige and hooked us up with that room. This is all second hand, but it sounded very successful.

got there about 11:30pm at night. male clerk simply asked if there were any complementory room upgrades with my 20 showing under my I.D and credit card. said sure checked on the computer and came up with paradise tower room with frig and a great view of the strip. got it for 7 days.

I had a $59 rate off their website and slipped a $20 in between my CC and my Diamond Club card. The clerk handed all three back when he told me no upgrades
It was on a weekday in the middle of January...surely there had to be something...at least a room in the Havana Tower.

I think I did this without even knowing it. My GF and I got to the Trop. right about 4pm on Thursday. When the clerk asked what kind of room we'd like I joked about getting a nice king bed, non-smoking room really high up in one of the towers with a great strip view. The clerk kind of smiled... kind of, and proceeded to tell us that room upgrades were an extra $something$ a night. I declined (since I'm cheap) and told him a regular king non-smoking room would be great. He clicked in his computer and then told us that all the garden rooms were full and proceeded to upgrade us. I didn't give him a $20 (cash was still tucked away) and assumed that it was my winning personality that got us the better room (or they were actually full). Hearing all these other stories I feel kind of bad now that I didn't give him some $$.
Next time I'll definately do it right!

First night at the Tropicana did the $20 under the credit card and ask if there is any complimentary upgrades avaiable. Then, the desk clerk said "let's see what I can do" and upgraded me to a suite room with decent view room with a Jacuzzi tub. I will definitely go back to Tropicana next time. Thanks all.
