Clerk didn’t want us to use his name, but we got a upgrade on a 3 night stay and had a waiver on the Resort fee for 2 of the 3 nights as we were on our 30th Wedding Anniversary. Time of day we checked in was during the Lunch hour and also got a early check in.
Asked any possible upgrade and can we Waive the resort fee as it’s our 30th anniversary and we are from Canada and have to pay $1.30 Canadian for each US dollar….
Checked in around 3pm – this was the first time attempting this, so I just gave it a go…
I told the gentleman behind the counter that my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary (true story) and slipped him the sandwich and asked if there were any comp upgrades available.
He said yes sir let me check – he told me that we were booked for a basic room on the 1st floor (probably because it was booked on hotwire) and he told me he would gladly put us in a Deluxe Plus room with more space and a great view on the 17th floor. He also comped our Resort fees and gave us 4 VIP Passed to the RPM Nightclub. I will be doing this every time I stay in a hotel now.
Noon, crazy busy, escorted to a clerk, full hotel (rates were high), landed high floor with a view upgrade.
I asked if they had any complimentary upgrades Since we’re celebrating our anniversary. I got 2 rooms to choose from. They also waived the resort fee. Completely awesome!! I tipped 20 dollars after getting the upgrade.
I went to check-in at around 4pm. Went to the first available check-in person and put $50 in my passport before hand so it was ready when she asked for it. Once I gave it to her I asked her is she had any “bigger rooms” available. The hotel was pretty booked up but she still managed to give me a suite.
Arrived at 23pm, only 2 counters opened and no-one in the queue.
I was reluctant at first to ask for the upgrade as there was a supervisor just next to the cleck. But she asked if I wanted to be upgraded (the common offer, for a price). So I’ve asked, just having the 20$ in the folded in my hand.
“This is what I can do for you” without even thinking twice. She proposed my a City view or a “mini-suite”, for which I opted (far from the casino but closest to the jacuzzi – the pool was closed).
Came in early afternoon around 2 pm. Picked the clerk that looked friendly. Asked about any upgrades they could do.
I was surprised they had availability due to the Valentine’s holiday but we got upgraded from a 375 sf Deluxe room to a 480 sf Deluxe Plus room. The extra space was definitely a plus
I targeted a clerk that was younger looking and appeared friendly. I had the $20 in between my ID and Credit Card, in a place where she could see it.
The problem was that they told me the room I’d been locked into was on a smoking floor. So at this point, we didn’t even have what we booked. I asked if there was anything she could do to help us, and she said she could waive the resort fee. The manager came over and I indicated for him to look at the $20. I asked if we could be upgraded to a Spa Suite for our inconvenience and he proceeded to tell me that our room rate would change to a total of over $2000…not what we were looking for.
We ended up not tipping. The guy still offered a $100 dining credit and waived resort fee. But we still didn’t get the room on the floor that was booked because the booking rep was incorrect about the floor being non-smoking.
This is the first time I tried this trick since learning of it and it worked like a charm. I booked with an on-line cheapo site so I knew the room would be nothing special. It was about 2:30ish and all the desk clerks were smiling and looked to be in a good mood so I didn’t target a specific one. When my turn came I just slipped her the sandwich, asked for any comp upgrades and she went to work typing away. After about 30 seconds she says there is a room ready on the 6th floor/strip view. I asked if that was the best she could do and she says there may be one higher up but she has to see if it’s clean. She then walks away to call the housekeeper manager, comes back and tells me it is ready. TOP FLOOR!! With a view of the strip. I will most certainly do this every time I go to Vegas. Thanks for turning me on to the little tip.
