Jackpot! Ben Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade
Booked Via Travelocity

I palmed the money in my hand. I made sure the clerk saw the money and asked if there were any upgrades available. He said it would take just a minute to see if anything was available. He offered a corner suite with a strip view. We took it and I gave him the money.

Jackpot! Sue Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

I was led to an agent who was a young male. He was smiling and very friendly. I gave him my confirmation information and credit card. We bantered about my being a return guest as I handed him a $20 folded bill. I asked him if he could possibly give me room with a view. He smiled and felt slightly uneasy. I should have slipped it in as suggested on this site. But he worked feverishly to find me an available room that I would like. At first he offered a corner suite on a lower floor or a strip view on a higher floor. I opted for the corner suite. He handed me my keys and directed me to the elevators. I was wondering why he directed me to the 2nd set of elevators reserved for higher floors. When I got into the elevators, I noticed that he had given me a much higher floor. The room was being still being serviced and I had to wait a few minutes but it was worth the wait. It was a nice corner suite (bigger and more windows) that offered views to the mountains, airport, pool, the Luxor and part of the strip. I think that he didn't want his coworkers to notice that he gave me a corner suite on a high floor. Vegas is losing so much money right now that comps or upgrades are rare especially since the room rates are so low. I was happy with the $20 tip, it was well worth it. My package also included a $100 resort credit for a 2-night stay. Good deal.

Jackpot! Ryan Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

Booked 4 nights standard room at Mandalay Bay. Got to check in about 11:30am Sunday. Little bit of wait, picked out a 25-30ish black male. Handed $20 sandwich, asked for complimentary upgrade. He quickly slid $20 into pocket and "apologized" for our "wait" in line. Proceeded to upgrade us to THESuite at TheHotel, 38th floor, strip view. I also asked for a mini fridge and he said normally they are $30 a night, but I will wave that charge for you! THANKS FOR THE TIPS!!

No Dice For Christina Smith at TheHotel...

There's this Asian girl who just loves her job. I gave her the $20 tip and she smiled, refused and said, I didn't have to and returned the tip back to me. To be honest, I got embarrassed when the tip was returned back to me. It made me feel cheap rather than superior. Everyone's in recession but it made me realize that these agents DONT HAVE TO LOSE THEIR JOBS w/ a stupid tip right? I think she had the impression that I was bribing her instead of tipping her. Oh well, KUDOS to the hotel for hiring such honest person!

Jackpot! JLee Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

I was helped by an older looking lady who didn't look very friendly, but I tried the $20 trick anyways. I made up a story that my girlfriend and I had met in Vegas and that I wanted to make this return trip special. It worked like a charm! She got us a room on a high floor(37th) at the far end of the hallway(I had read that these are bigger) with a beautiful strip view. SCORE!

I had a friend that was staying at the same hotel who did not try the $20 tip and he was given a room on the 9th floor and not at the end of the hall. His room was only slightly smaller, but we had 2 LCD tv's instead of 1 LCD and 1 regular tv. Also, the view from his room was not even worth opening the curtains while I was watching the Las Vegas strip from my bed every night.

Lined up for a male clerk and did the Credit Card Sandwich with a $20. Reed hooked me up with a 31st floor suite with an amazing view, all the pool passes I wanted for my friends who weren't staying at Mandalay, and told me he could get me and my friends into Mix without a cover or a line. Even gave us a late checkout. I'm trying this everywhere now!

Jackpot! ilovevegas Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

Booked a single room for 4 people. Had a queen double but also needed a roll-away, and obviously wanted to get a nicer room :)
I slipped the $20 in the sandwich and made sure the clerk saw it. He was extremely friendly and I told him the $20 was for him and wondered if he could hook us up with a nice room and also a roll-away. He put us on the 35th floor with a strip view and said the rollaway bed would be there shortly. He asked if I needed anything else like a mini fridge or anything and I said, "sure! that would be great". Checked in to the room and within 2 minutes there was someone knocking on the door with the roll-away bed and a mini fridge.
Best $20 ever spent. Oh and the strip view was gorgeous.

My brother did it... we didn't get a room upgrade but got some free spa passes. I think he told me all the rooms were taken and if we wanted an upgrade we can come back the next day and ask if there are any available, but we were too lazy to do that

No Dice For Johnny R. at TheHotel...

Slid the $20 sandwich to the agent when she asked for my ID and credit card. She said there were no complimentary upgrades available. She handed it back to me & asked me if I wanted to PAY for the upgrade instead. My counterpart tried with another agent, and was denied.

Jackpot! Gaz Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

Desk clark looked somewhat straight, so I didn't fancy my chances, but thought 'what's there to lose' and had a go anyway. Slipped $20 between passport and credit card, and said (with a wink) "Sorry for being a bit cheeky, but I don't suppose you could sort us out a nice room?" or words to that effect. She originally looked like she was going to say no, then spotted the $20, grinned, and we were in business.

She told us she'd find us something great. Went away and came back a few minutes later and said she had a great room with an amazing strip view on the 61st floor, as long as we didn't mind having no minibar and didn't mind the height. Otherwise I think she'd have put us in a suite without the great view, but only being there one night, we went for the room.

Room was great - on the 61st floor with a stunning view out over the strip. Bathroom was very cool with two sinks, and a huge bath with water jets and bubbles, bathroom packed full of Bulgari stuff. Not sure if this is available in rooms normally as it was the first time I'd stayed there (the receptionist implied that it wasn't) but either way, we were very happy.

In short, the view alone was worth the $20.

Jackpot! JSC Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

FYI... From what I gather TheHotel@MB is mainly a suite hotel. However, they have a small number of basic/regular rooms called THEdeluxe, which are styled similarly to THEsuites. So I took my chances and booked the lower priced THEdeluxe room, hoping the $20 trick would work and get me an upgrade to THEsuite.

So... I arrived in LV in the morning and after picking up the rental car, I drove over to TheHotel@MB just to drop off my bags. Without even stepping inside the hotel, I went to grab some lunch elsewhere and came back to TheHotel around 4pm to check in. I had a $20 bill folded up between my ID & CC and handed it to the front desk person. I asked in a soft voice whether it was possible to get a room upgrade. Since my CC is semi-clear, the front desk guy must have seen the $20 and said, "let me see what I can do" while typing away at his system. He said he could give me a suite, but the room hasn't been serviced by housekeeping yet and asked if I would mind waiting. I said, "sure, no problem." He then started typing away again and asked if I could wait a moment while he checked something in the back. So he disappeared for a minute, came back and said he could give me an even larger suite on a high floor that is currently available. SUCCESS!!!

Funny thing though... after he had my info from my driver's license and credit card, he handed those back to me and left the $20 bill in plain sight right on top of his keyboard (above the numeric keypad). It was sitting there for at least a couple minutes while I signed the guest registration paperwork and it was still there as he handed me the room cards and I turned away towards the elevators. So I never saw if he eventually slipped the $20 into his pocket or did something else with it.

Worked very well. Told the guy I'd make it worth his while if he gave me something good when my room wasn't ready at checkin. He did some typing and told me I'd love the room. It was the penthouse suite on the 62nd floor, with a strip view, mountain view, city view etc. More or less the corner of the hotel.

Jackpot! Hello there Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

Tipped 50 bucks, she seemed to be familiar with the trick. She left it tucked between the cards, spent about 10 min getting us the upgrade and was VERY nice to us!! The guy next to me had a 20 laying out on the counted, I think he may have been doing the same thing. 50 may have been a bit much, but honestly, I was hoping for something even bigger than the V suite. We'll try again next time.

Jackpot! joelmold Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

Handed her my DL and CC with the $20 folded between, just like everyone else. Right away she started to hand it back to me, but before she did I asked if she could give us a high room with a strip view. (all the rooms are suites here-- some rooms are larger than others, but really I just wanted the strip view) She seemed new and not familiar with the $20 trick. She said they didn't have anything left that night, but that she could set up a room change for me the next day. She put us in a room on the desert side on the 23rd floor, and arranged a transfer to the 35th floor strip view the next day. I also asked for and received 2 complimentary spa passes. At the end she tried to give me the $20 back again but I smiled, said it was for her, and told her thanks. I think I probably could have gotten the view room without the $20 tip, but I still feel it was worth it. I'm going back in September to Mandalay Bay (not TheHotel) and will try it again then.

thanks everyone for responding to this and keeping it going!

My girlfriend also insisted I didnt try it, but I did. What do you have to lose? Some face with an underpaid hotel clerk? Please.

Anyway, if you know about this hotel, you know that the rooms on the end are a bit larger than the "normal" suites and have plasmas in the bedrooms instead of regular TVs.

Anyway, when we got there, the checkin line was probably 100 people long (no joke - took 45 mins to get to the front). Anyway, I thought the $20 trick didnt stand a chance, but I gave it a shot....and it worked! The clerk saw the $20, and I asked if there was any possibility to get one of the end rooms. His reply: "I was actually checking on this for you..." haha!

The great thing about this trick is that this guy gave us incredible service our entire time there, in addition to a nicer room.

Tip to everybody: put the $20 folded in your palm. When you hand them your credit card, confirmation form, etc, just flash the $20. KEEP IT IN YOUR HAND though. I've seen people give the $20 to the clerk right away - wrong move since if they cant upgrade you (maybe the hotel is full), youre out $20. Anyway, make sure they see the $20, then ask if there are any upgrades that are available.

Now most importantly, some hotels are very strict that their front desk clerks dont get tips. So, you want to DISCREETLY give the $20 to the clerk. Maybe when you are signing off on something...or when shake his/her hand and thank him for the help. In other words, just dont advertise it.

Jackpot! JenDMac Got A TheHotel Room Upgrade

We originally reserved a regular suite through Southwest Airlines. We were anticipating getting a room with just a view of the desert. After reading the advice here, I decided to try it. When we got to the hotel, the line to check in went through the hotel lobby. So I thought there must be a convention and our chances of getting upgraded would be slim but thought we'd try it nonetheless. After I slipped the $20 in between my credit card and I.D and asked the clerk if there were any complimentary upgrades, he did some magic and gave us a fabulous corner room on the 33rd floor. I will definitely try this trick again. Thanks for the tip.

Upgraded To: 38th Floor Corner Upgraded Suite with fabulous views of the strip from bedroom and main living area. We were also comped spa passes for each day we are here. $60 value per day.

We arrived at the perfect time today. There were only a few people checking in. I ended up getting checked in from a very young and attractive lady. I made some small talk with her and told her I wanted to surprise my wife and if there was anything she could do to help me that I would greatly appreciate it. She told me to hold on a moment and she went back and got permission to give us the room she wanted to give us. She was super sweet and then asked if my wife would enjoy the spa as well. Of course I said yes, and she gave us 2 passes for each day we are. I gave her a $20 tip and thanked her. I am writing this right now looking out at our gorgesous view of the strip. I found out about this $20 trick from this website so I thought I should share my experience.
