Jackpot! George Forgan-Smith Got A Planet Hollywood Room Upgrade

Did the standard tip sandwich and then requested if there were any comp upgrades available.
Was told he would see what he could do.
First offer was a standard room with Bellagio view, I sort of hummed and ahhed
The next offer was for a Resort room, smoker that was not available at the time.
I asked if there was anything else available and he said no. He did not do much in the way of searching.
When I got into the room a few hours later, it absolutely reeked of cigar smoke.
I went downstairs and explained. They were able to change it to another resort room that was a non smoker.
Overall the room is nice, however I think the $50 was way overkill, I could have gotten the same upgrade for a twenty.
Of note the guy at the desk did ask if I wanted change for the $50 but I felt it was a bit too much to ask for $30 back. I just commented that if any thing better came up I would appreciate him looking into it.
Sadly he didn't.

Wasn't completely satsfied at first with the weak upgrade, thought 40 would do the trick...
However, after comparing with other friends who got "Aladdin" style rooms I was very satisfied...

so, i tried the 20 dollar tip for the first time.
checked in around 1130am..no line..so i went to the first available person..i had reservation for a deluxe room w/ king bed...they are sold out according to their website...she asked for ID, i had the DL/cash/AMEX sandwich ready..i asked for a complementary upgrade..she was looking down and started to say its not possible as they are booked..then she saw the cash..and she checked to see how much it was...then she went to the back
and came back and gave me a resort room (worth 50 dollars more than the deluxe room).
nice view of pool and Bellagio fountains as well

Checked in early around 12 noon. Handed over ID, $20 and CC and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. Clerk smiled and said she'd check.
After a few mins she leaned forward and whispered that she had managed to get us a Resort room on the 23rd floor that had been remodeled and had a view of the Bellagio fountains. Jackpot!
This is the second time I've tried it at PH and it's worked like a charm both times.

Short line at 2 PM. Got a nice young guy and slipped the $20 in between the DL and the CC and I never even saw where the $20 went! He could be on stage with that move. All the renovated rooms were taken but he gave me a huge room overlooking the pools and the Bellagio fountains and North. Beautiful bathroom and soaking tub. VERY quiet on the 20th floor.

Arrived at PH around 11am after checking out at the MGM. Went up to the first available check-in person and gave him my name and handed him my DL and CC with a $20 bill extending slightly out between the 2 cards. I asked him very politely if there was a possibility of a complimentary upgrade. He said he would see what he could do. He began punching the keyboard looking for rooms that were available for immediate check-in. Told him i would need 2 queen beds(my nephew and his wife were sharing our room). He checked on about 5 rooms which all hadnt been cleaned yet. I jokingly told him if there wasnt a room available yet that i would settle for a top floor room. He smiled and the a few seconds later he said he would give us a VIP room on the 50th floor and that it was ready right now. I said sure and thanked him a few times. He gave us the key and explained how to work the elevator to get to the vip floor...you need to slide your card in a slot in the elevator and then proceed to push the floor number. The room was fantastic. Had acomplete view of the fountains of Bellagio. Our room was directly under the P of the PH sign on the top of the casino.Great deal as we only paid $89 a night for the room. Remember to be polite and smile and it never hurts to engage in some small talk with the check-in person. I use this procedure every time I go to Vegas and it has never failed to get me an upgraded room.

Tips are always appreciated in the hotel business. An additional twenty dollars as a tip will get you appreciation and exceptional service. Most of all though, unless an agent is taking a chance to break the "rules" you are not guaranteed a complimentary upgrade. A great demeanor, friendly attitude, and patience can get you just as far as a tip. Providing there is availibility you will get the best effort and product an agent can offer without comprimising his/her livelyhood. 95% of the time it is up to the managers and they want yo u to pay the standard upgrade price. People can lose their jobs providing you suites at discounted prices. It happens everyday. Using names and describing the person who fell for this trick will never help only harm. Have fun in vegas and remember there is always someone willing to provide you the best experience and service in Vegas along with anywhere else. You will be surprised how a little understanding goes a long way for you and the person helping you behind the desk.

I followed instructions putting $20 between cc and dl and handed to clerk right off. He appeared to be in training as he had another man standing at his shoulder. He laid the 20 on the keyboard in plain view. I asked for an upgrade and after some time he said he could offer me a room with a view. I assume this was an upgrade, but can't be ure I wouldn't have gotten TI otherwise (but I doubt it).

Went straight to the first available clerk, gave him my credit card and ID. In my hand I had my players club card (which I had just picked up 5 mins before checking in) and a folded $20 bill. I asked him for any complimentary upgrades, and after typing for a couple of minutes, he said I could have X room for $100/night more or Y room for $75/night more. I then tapped the counter with my players club card and the $20 bill and told him that I looking for something that wouldn't cost me anything on top of what I've already paid for ($99/night)... Again, after a couple of minutes he said he could give me either a Resort Room (non renovated on the 7th floor facing the back of the hotel) or a Deluxe Fountain View Room (newly renovated room on the 34th floor, facing the Bellagio, going for $279 that night). I opted for the Deluxe Fountain View Room, and then changed my $20 to a $10 and handed it to him once he gave me my keys.

My boyfriend and I chatted up the front desk clerk and explained that we were checking in for a friend that was coming from Fargo, ND. We mentioned that he had never been any place where there was more than a few hundred people and how coming to Vegas would be a mind-blowing experience for him, and she was more than happy to upgrade his room for free (without us even asking)!

Per usual put 2 X $20 between my cc and passport and asked if any of the suites had been renovated. He indicated that only some basic rooms had been, so I specifically asked if he could sneak us into a panoramic suite, as I flashed the twenties. He said he would see what he could do, he went and spoke to what looked like a manager, and came back about 5 minutes later. He said he could get us a room on the 21st floor (but wouldn't be ready for 2 hours), room was 2101, with a view of NYNY, MGM etc.. The room was huge, decor a little dated but well worth the tip. We were with 4 other couples so the room served as a great starting point for our nights out in Sin City.

I've used the Front Desk Tip before with sucess on our last 2 Vegas trips but nothing like this experience. When we arrived at PH the check in line was over 2 hours long and my wife and I were exhausted from our flight delays. I walked up to a clerk and asked her if she could check us in without waiting in line if I gave her $20, to which she said "Sure". I slipped her $20, thanked her and then asked if they had any complimentary upgrades. She was the nicest clerk I've ever dealt with. It was amazing, she pulled out a book of room floor plans and showed us a deluxe suite with strip views of the Bellagio fountains. Our friends followed behind us, tip her $20 too and received the adjoining suite. It was the greatest room set-up we've ever had. I grabbed her card and am definitely dealing directly with her every time now.
I never woulda known this without viweing your website...Thank You for the tip/advice.

Went to Vegas for mom's 60th birthday and family reunion. Got 2 separate reservation from Expedia.ca for 3 rooms (8 people).
First off, arrived at 10-ish (originally around 8-ish, but there was a delay in Seattle's airport), checked in with a Chinese lady.
It was an awkward moment at first because I thought I needed to show my passport (because I wasn't from the States), and she gave the $20 I enclosed in my passport back to me!
I started by telling a story that this is kind of a special trip for my mom and see if there is any upgrade possible, she flatly told me an upgrade will cost us $50 each night.
So I didn't say anything until later, once again, I spoke the magic word of "if there is any complimentary upgrade I will greatly appreciate it because it's my mom's 60th birthday", and it finally dawn on her what I was talking about... and this time I was ready (putting the $20 in between the driving license and the credit card), and she quickly move the $20 to her right pocket...
Same deal for my aunt's reservation... We ended up upgrading 3 rooms from deluxe to resort, one of them was facing the Bellagio Fountain and Eiffel Tower.
I considered this a success... although next time I will be sure to start with the credit card and driving license... :-)

Went to check-in and gave her my dl and asked if there were any upgrades available. She said "no", as they were sold out. I put a twenty in front of my cc and she caught a glimpse of it and said, "let me check." After checking she said she can give us a suite. The suite was awesome, 4 couches, a wet bar, a tub with a strip view, two bathrooms (one with a really low drinking fountain). All for $70/night +$20 tip.

DID THE $20 BETWEEN THE CREDIT CARD AND LICENSE. HANDED THEM BOTH TO THE CLERK, ASKED ABOUT COMP UPGRADE. HE SMILED AND SAID, "I THINK I CAN FIND SOMETHING". SINCE I ORIGINALLY BOOKED A FOUNTAIN VIEW ROOM HE SAID HE WOULD FIND A SUITE FACING THE FOUNTAINS AS WELL. I GOT A SUITE ON THE 25TH FLOOR-GREAT VIEW OF THE STRIP AND FOUNTAINS. WILL DEFINATELY TRY THIS AGAIN.

Did the usual, asian girl behind desk had broken english but knew what was up, must have typed in a good number of codes to get the upgrade, so it took a few minutes, felt like a long time.
She gave me a choice a big room (550ft) or a reno room (450 ft) with a strip view over the fountains, plasma TV, etc. I took the view 35th floor, great.
I also asked if room had a fridge she said "no, you want one", so within 15 min of check in i got a fridge. Fridge was free and not on bill.
I checked in on a Thursday around 4pm, hotel was quiet and i think that helped. She left $20 on computer, was still there when I left, people walked by (managers, etc) and she just had the card covering the money, she didnt cover it up.
There are lots of cameras around the front desk, but that doesnt matter.
