My wife and I took my mom to LV for her birthday. We had reserved 2 standard rooms online using the AAA promo code at $89 each for 3 nights.
My wife and I approached the young Asian male desk clerk with 2 twenties between license and credit card, since we were getting two rooms. We told him about the birthday situation and commented on how nice the hotel looked since we were there during the renovation. I said, " I was hoping you could find us a couple of room upgrades". He looked at the twenties and said, "I can take care of that for you". He took the sandwich and then places it on the computer terminal in front of him. The Bills were gone. My wife said it was as if they just disappeared. ;-)
He took a good amount of time to make sure we didnt necessarily need the rooms to be adjoining and that it wasnt even necessary they were on the same floor. He got out the floor plan book to show us the various options. He recommended the two rooms that would give us both a view up the strip facing the Bellagio. We ended up with Resort rooms (~$239-$279)on the 22nd and 17th floors. They were great with great views and ammenties.
The couldn't have been more helpful and nice.

This worked great for me. Checked in around 1pm and there was no wait in the check in line. There were 4 of us getting 2 rooms for three nights. Spoke with an female asian desk clerk who was upbeat and real friendly. When she asked for my id and cc I slid $40 between them and handed them to her. I asked her if there were any complimentary upgrades to rooms with a view of the strip. She smiled and told me she would see what she could do. 5 minutes later the four of us were on our way to the 23 floor (top floor) of the north tower. The upgrae was great!! Our upgrade would have costed us 80 bucks per night per room. That's a total upgrade worth 480 bucks for only 40 bucks!!! This is definately worth the try for anyone who is on the fence about trying it. Simple and easy.

So there were 3 clerks at the front desk and we chose the youngest male. We slipped the 20 dollars and he quickly grabbed it and put it in his pocket. He said we could have a newly renovated room on a top floor with a view of the Bellagio fountains or a bigger resort room with the view of the south strip. We chose the Bellagio fountain view and were very happy with the view and the room

Worked like a charm! I did my homework before I left so I had a rough idea of what was available for upgrade (no sense asking for a suite when it wasn't available). Put the $20 between my ID and CC made sure the clerk saw it and casually asked if an upgrade was available. He take the sandwich and began checking. He asked if a resort room with a strip view was OK for an upgrade and if I minded that it was a smoking room. I accepted and only then did he pocket the $20. Great room, well worth the $20.00!

Both my friend and I tried the 20 and both worked. He was with a guy and opted for the Resort Room on the top floor facing NY NY and the south strip... it was very spacious and good for 2 guys. I was offered that also but opted for the newly renovated hollywood hip room overlooking the Bellagio fountain and eiffel tower on the 26th floor. I opted for this one since I was with my girlfriend and didnt need the extra space. The view was one of the best in vegas. Also, be sure to ask for a refrigerator if youd like... they will hook you up for free.

checked in at 8pm on a Saturday night. handed the front desk staff the credit card sandwich and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. She said a resort room upgrade is normally $80 per night so we got more space for a merely $20. worth it!
I was very nervous at first having never done this and only reading the past experiences here, but it worked smoothly. THANKS!!!

Got to Planet Hollywood at 10:30 pm friday night. There was a long line at check-in.I'm a Starwood preferred member and thought I'd give it a try to go to VIP.GOt to the VIP lane, placed the $20 bill between the credit card and ID.The lady at the front desk told me she couldn't take it and handed it back.I asked her to give me a renovated room anyways. She said she'd try and she gave me renovated 34th floor room with a city view. She also told me that she'd put points on my Starwood card although I wasn't a Gold member.I think I won her with my smile!

Checked in after being stuck in ontario california airport on a diversion due to weather in Vegas...missed SuperBowl but check in clerk was very nice. She gave us an upgrade to a 33rd floor room with a nice view of the strip and a bunch of comps....awesome deal considering we booked 3 nights (Sun-Wed) for a total of $340 plus a car on Expedia....
Only complaint is the parking garage on opposite end of hotel so you gotta walk the mall to get to your room...but it is a fantastic hotel all around... Definitly the best stay I have had in a long time in Vegas.

We arrived to the hotel around 3pm. Maybe it was too early in the day, it was New Year's Eve or there was a supervisor watching. But here is how it played out. I went to the clerk and handed him my DL and CC with the $20 folded in between. I asked him if there were any complimentary upgrades as this was my gf's first time in Vegas. He didn't notice the $20 yet. He told me he'll see what he could do. He was very fast at typing, and he seemed to be doing a lot of searching. While searching he fumbled around with my DL and noticed the $20. He quickly apologized saying he's not allowed to accept it and handed me back my $20, but he said he'll try to find a good room for me. He was friendly and courteous. He found a room with a strip view, but it wasn't one of the newly renovated rooms. I was fine and took the offer.

Checked in at 230pm. Huge, ugly line for checkin.
Went to VIP line, 2 in front of me.
When I gave the agent my name, a little frown as
I did not belong in that line. Handed the $20
sandwich, frown disappears. Asked for any help in
obtaining an upgrade with view. Within a couple ofminutes, had a 34th floor renovated room, huge
spa tub, great view, and it was ready (party line:
return for room keys at ~430-5pm) Very efficient
use of $20!

I found this site on the web and felt that the $20 tip would be worth a try and boy did it work. My wife and I checked into the hotel on 12/17/07. Perry, the clerk, was very friendly and helpful. After a little conversation, I slipped him the credit card, $20, license and asked if he could see if there were any upgrades that were available for us. He replied "Are you bribing me?" with a playful tone, and said that he would see what he could do. We were upgraded to a strip suite which was a newly renovated room on the 23rd floor of the south tower (normally priced at $299+ per night). The room was on the inside corner of the lower tower, with stip views from all windows. The Bellagio fountains were visible from the bathtub, which overlooked the strip (and had a flat TV with HD above the tub). The bedroom had a flat TV and a view of the strip, complete with a Bellagio fountain view from the bed. This is probably the best $20 that we spent on our trip!

We booked the cheapest room we could (which is a basic deluxe room) for two nights. The second night was free because of a promo code we used.
They have a single line that feeds into all the clerks. I got pulled to the VIP counter since it was empty. Ended up one category higher in a renovated (Winona Ryder themed) "Deluxe Room with a Strip view" of the Bellagio fountains on the 30th floor. It's normally $30/night more but since we got the 2nd night free, the gain was only $10. However, we were still pretty happy with the upgrade since the room was a reno'ed one and the view was great (eg. We could have ended up with no view or a view to the south instead).

Made small talk for a minute with front desk clerk. then put credit card with 20 sandwiched in with drivers license. upgraded 1 room to 23rd floor south tower nice room and the other room had to be changed twice to 14th floor with upgraded bathroom and sofa. overall a nice upgrade, her attitude was great however a lot of the employees at PH are not happy and need to be retrained or coached

Arrived at 10.00 am Sunday morning, figured it might be to early. Went up to check out very nice young lady there handed her the twenty sandwich and asked if any upgrades were available. She said sure, typed a few minutes and gave me a remodeled resort room with a view of the fountains. It was also on floor 23 so it had big windows from floor to ceiling (very happy)

Tried this with $30. Male clerk happily checked for an upgrade immediately.
I needed two queen beds so I only got a resort room on the 19th floor with a view of the fountains.
Could have gotten a resort vista if I wanted to.
Worth it imho.
I think tipping $20 is enough to get the upgrade though.
