No Dice For Simon at Planet Hollywood...

We arrived to the hotel around 3pm. Maybe it was too early in the day, it was New Year's Eve or there was a supervisor watching. But here is how it played out. I went to the clerk and handed him my DL and CC with the $20 folded in between. I asked him if there were any complimentary upgrades as this was my gf's first time in Vegas. He didn't notice the $20 yet. He told me he'll see what he could do. He was very fast at typing, and he seemed to be doing a lot of searching. While searching he fumbled around with my DL and noticed the $20. He quickly apologized saying he's not allowed to accept it and handed me back my $20, but he said he'll try to find a good room for me. He was friendly and courteous. He found a room with a strip view, but it wasn't one of the newly renovated rooms. I was fine and took the offer.

Checked in at 230pm. Huge, ugly line for checkin.
Went to VIP line, 2 in front of me.
When I gave the agent my name, a little frown as
I did not belong in that line. Handed the $20
sandwich, frown disappears. Asked for any help in
obtaining an upgrade with view. Within a couple ofminutes, had a 34th floor renovated room, huge
spa tub, great view, and it was ready (party line:
return for room keys at ~430-5pm) Very efficient
use of $20!

I found this site on the web and felt that the $20 tip would be worth a try and boy did it work. My wife and I checked into the hotel on 12/17/07. Perry, the clerk, was very friendly and helpful. After a little conversation, I slipped him the credit card, $20, license and asked if he could see if there were any upgrades that were available for us. He replied "Are you bribing me?" with a playful tone, and said that he would see what he could do. We were upgraded to a strip suite which was a newly renovated room on the 23rd floor of the south tower (normally priced at $299+ per night). The room was on the inside corner of the lower tower, with stip views from all windows. The Bellagio fountains were visible from the bathtub, which overlooked the strip (and had a flat TV with HD above the tub). The bedroom had a flat TV and a view of the strip, complete with a Bellagio fountain view from the bed. This is probably the best $20 that we spent on our trip!

Jackpot! Jay Got A Planet Hollywood Room Upgrade

We booked the cheapest room we could (which is a basic deluxe room) for two nights. The second night was free because of a promo code we used.

They have a single line that feeds into all the clerks. I got pulled to the VIP counter since it was empty. Ended up one category higher in a renovated (Winona Ryder themed) "Deluxe Room with a Strip view" of the Bellagio fountains on the 30th floor. It's normally $30/night more but since we got the 2nd night free, the gain was only $10. However, we were still pretty happy with the upgrade since the room was a reno'ed one and the view was great (eg. We could have ended up with no view or a view to the south instead).

Made small talk for a minute with front desk clerk. then put credit card with 20 sandwiched in with drivers license. upgraded 1 room to 23rd floor south tower nice room and the other room had to be changed twice to 14th floor with upgraded bathroom and sofa. overall a nice upgrade, her attitude was great however a lot of the employees at PH are not happy and need to be retrained or coached

Arrived at 10.00 am Sunday morning, figured it might be to early. Went up to check out very nice young lady there handed her the twenty sandwich and asked if any upgrades were available. She said sure, typed a few minutes and gave me a remodeled resort room with a view of the fountains. It was also on floor 23 so it had big windows from floor to ceiling (very happy)

Tried this with $30. Male clerk happily checked for an upgrade immediately.
I needed two queen beds so I only got a resort room on the 19th floor with a view of the fountains.
Could have gotten a resort vista if I wanted to.
Worth it imho.
I think tipping $20 is enough to get the upgrade though.

Jackpot! George Forgan-Smith Got A Planet Hollywood Room Upgrade

Did the standard tip sandwich and then requested if there were any comp upgrades available.
Was told he would see what he could do.
First offer was a standard room with Bellagio view, I sort of hummed and ahhed
The next offer was for a Resort room, smoker that was not available at the time.
I asked if there was anything else available and he said no. He did not do much in the way of searching.

When I got into the room a few hours later, it absolutely reeked of cigar smoke.
I went downstairs and explained. They were able to change it to another resort room that was a non smoker.
Overall the room is nice, however I think the $50 was way overkill, I could have gotten the same upgrade for a twenty.
Of note the guy at the desk did ask if I wanted change for the $50 but I felt it was a bit too much to ask for $30 back. I just commented that if any thing better came up I would appreciate him looking into it.
Sadly he didn't.

so, i tried the 20 dollar tip for the first time.
checked in around 1130am..no line..so i went to the first available person..i had reservation for a deluxe room w/ king bed...they are sold out according to their website...she asked for ID, i had the DL/cash/AMEX sandwich ready..i asked for a complementary upgrade..she was looking down and started to say its not possible as they are booked..then she saw the cash..and she checked to see how much it was...then she went to the back
and came back and gave me a resort room (worth 50 dollars more than the deluxe room).
nice view of pool and Bellagio fountains as well

Checked in early around 12 noon. Handed over ID, $20 and CC and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. Clerk smiled and said she'd check.

After a few mins she leaned forward and whispered that she had managed to get us a Resort room on the 23rd floor that had been remodeled and had a view of the Bellagio fountains. Jackpot!

This is the second time I've tried it at PH and it's worked like a charm both times.

Short line at 2 PM. Got a nice young guy and slipped the $20 in between the DL and the CC and I never even saw where the $20 went! He could be on stage with that move. All the renovated rooms were taken but he gave me a huge room overlooking the pools and the Bellagio fountains and North. Beautiful bathroom and soaking tub. VERY quiet on the 20th floor.

Jackpot! Ron and Susan Got A Planet Hollywood Room Upgrade

Arrived at PH around 11am after checking out at the MGM. Went up to the first available check-in person and gave him my name and handed him my DL and CC with a $20 bill extending slightly out between the 2 cards. I asked him very politely if there was a possibility of a complimentary upgrade. He said he would see what he could do. He began punching the keyboard looking for rooms that were available for immediate check-in. Told him i would need 2 queen beds(my nephew and his wife were sharing our room). He checked on about 5 rooms which all hadnt been cleaned yet. I jokingly told him if there wasnt a room available yet that i would settle for a top floor room. He smiled and the a few seconds later he said he would give us a VIP room on the 50th floor and that it was ready right now. I said sure and thanked him a few times. He gave us the key and explained how to work the elevator to get to the vip floor...you need to slide your card in a slot in the elevator and then proceed to push the floor number. The room was fantastic. Had acomplete view of the fountains of Bellagio. Our room was directly under the P of the PH sign on the top of the casino.Great deal as we only paid $89 a night for the room. Remember to be polite and smile and it never hurts to engage in some small talk with the check-in person. I use this procedure every time I go to Vegas and it has never failed to get me an upgraded room.

Tips are always appreciated in the hotel business. An additional twenty dollars as a tip will get you appreciation and exceptional service. Most of all though, unless an agent is taking a chance to break the "rules" you are not guaranteed a complimentary upgrade. A great demeanor, friendly attitude, and patience can get you just as far as a tip. Providing there is availibility you will get the best effort and product an agent can offer without comprimising his/her livelyhood. 95% of the time it is up to the managers and they want yo u to pay the standard upgrade price. People can lose their jobs providing you suites at discounted prices. It happens everyday. Using names and describing the person who fell for this trick will never help only harm. Have fun in vegas and remember there is always someone willing to provide you the best experience and service in Vegas along with anywhere else. You will be surprised how a little understanding goes a long way for you and the person helping you behind the desk.

Jackpot! Jean Got A Planet Hollywood Room Upgrade

I followed instructions putting $20 between cc and dl and handed to clerk right off. He appeared to be in training as he had another man standing at his shoulder. He laid the 20 on the keyboard in plain view. I asked for an upgrade and after some time he said he could offer me a room with a view. I assume this was an upgrade, but can't be ure I wouldn't have gotten TI otherwise (but I doubt it).

Jackpot! zrajani Got A Planet Hollywood Room Upgrade

Went straight to the first available clerk, gave him my credit card and ID. In my hand I had my players club card (which I had just picked up 5 mins before checking in) and a folded $20 bill. I asked him for any complimentary upgrades, and after typing for a couple of minutes, he said I could have X room for $100/night more or Y room for $75/night more. I then tapped the counter with my players club card and the $20 bill and told him that I looking for something that wouldn't cost me anything on top of what I've already paid for ($99/night)... Again, after a couple of minutes he said he could give me either a Resort Room (non renovated on the 7th floor facing the back of the hotel) or a Deluxe Fountain View Room (newly renovated room on the 34th floor, facing the Bellagio, going for $279 that night). I opted for the Deluxe Fountain View Room, and then changed my $20 to a $10 and handed it to him once he gave me my keys.
