Just followed advice from these posts, got a 22nd floor suite for 3 nights at $88 per plus the $20. Fairly slow week on the strip overall. Friend checked in the night before (Monday)with same approach and only got a sort of fountain view standard room on 15th floor. The suite was awsome, two flat screens, one of them over the bathtub. Also a fountain view from bathtub.

No Dice For gary at Planet Hollywood...

So, had a free room via a terminated host at
Planet Hollywood for 11/28 and 29. Arrived
with $20 sandwich just to made sure we got
a Fountain view room.
click, click, she went. sorry, we will honor
your comp, but you don't qualify for a fountain
view.
should have asked for a host right then, but
didn;t. Went to room, nice but crappy view.
Unhappy kids. Called for casino host. Quick
apology, come back to front desk, and new room
great view, huge friggin bathtub/spa that the kids love, folowed shortly by fruit tray and passes to buffet.
So $20 failed, but phone call worked.

Tipped 20 for adjoining rooms for me and my husband and baby. The rooms were only 60 bucks a night so we got 2 so the baby could sleep and we could watch TV. It was like a Mini Suite with the adjoining doors open but the hotel rooms were a mess! In room # 1, the phones didn't work had to call from room #2 to get them repaired. Remote for TV was missing from room #2, Hall light burnt out in room #2. Missing toiletries in room #1 ect.....won't stay again for all those reasons. Also, on a side note, the rooms and hotel hallways look like they were in a SUPER BIG HURRY TO GET THEM FINISHED. They look 1/2 assed for sure and the shampoo and soaps STINK. 20 bucks got me connecting rooms, but at the Palms, 20 bucks got us an amazing suite. Whatever, live and learn.

Got down to the strip at noon, proceeded to get rip roarin' drunk and went to check into the room around 4PM. My Girlfriend and I vaugely remember getting to the front desk, but slipped the guy the sandwich and asked "Do you have any complimentary suite upgrades?" Slurringly chatted with him until he said he had a room that we would be very happy with. Cracked another beer. Meandered up to our room and tried to get in but the key didnt work. Got upset that we had been hosed over for our $20 bucks, but then realized we were on the wrong floor...damn you Jager. Finally got to our hotel room, and were AMAZED at the place. 2 giant flat screens, foyer, huge 1200 SQFT, giant bahtroom with tub overlooking Bellagio and Paris. Will def slip the sandwich some more. (It helps when you have liquid courage.)

Decided to try the $20 trick, nothing to lose. We booked a deluxe room through an Expedia package and wre only paying about $75 a night. We handed the younger Asian clerk the sandwhich and he asked what the $20 was for. We asked if he could help us with an upgrade and he handed it back and said he would see what he could do before he would tale the money. He left the counter and returned a few minutes later and said that he had a room that we would like. We handed him the $20 with the hotel reciept that we had to sign.
He was very nice and we were pleasantly surprised when we got to the elevator and had to put in our room key to gain access to the top Penthouse level, floor 51. It was a two room suite with a bar, a fridge and an ice machine. It looked out the rear of the hotel, but who could compain about that after such an upgrade!
So far I have used this trick here, at The hotel and Loews Lake Las Vegas and it has not let me down yet.

Silly me thought I had already reserved a Resort Vista Room and tipped $50 to get a suite. I didn't realize I only had a regular Fountain View room. Either way, I checked in and Kim was the clerk that was nice enough to help me.
I handed her the sandwich and asked for a complimentary upgrade. She did some typing, handed me back my $50 and went to go talk to someone. She came back and said she is authorized to give me a Resort Vista room upgrade. This is normally a $110/night upgrade. I asked her about a suite since I was in town with my girlfriend and planning to propose to her. Kim told me the best she could do was the Resort Vista room.
I told her I'd take it and then handed the $50 back to her. It wasn't ready yet so we checked our bags and walked around a little bit till it was ready.
I recommend PH to everyone. Great hotel, great staff and not part of the big conglomerations so willing to work a little harder to make you happy.

Checked in at VIP desk. Slipped the clerk $20 with credit card and license and specifically asked for a Strip-view Resort Room. I should have requested a fountain-view room, as the room we got was facing south... not quite as good as we had hoped. Either way, the room upgrade was nice and worth the $20.

I did some research and was kind of scared of failing. I just said screw it. I told him if you take care of me I will take care of you and I put the 20 on the counter. He said people do this and then try to take the money back. I told him don't worry, I just wanted him to try his best and it was his. He said he took care of me, so I gave it to him. I was very pleased beautiful view. I have went before and had terrible views on the back and parking garage views. I will do this from now on. PS. You must be a real cheap ass if you try to trick someone into getting a upgrade. I was suprised to hear that.

No Dice For Patrick at Planet Hollywood...

I arrived around 10pm and gave him the sandwich. He said he was new and they told him he can't accept tips, but he would check. He went to the back and when he came back, he said he found a "renovated room" but it was smoking. I said that would be fine. When I got there, it was a downgrade from what I booked (The reservation was Hollywood Hip King/Non-Smoking but the room he gave me was Hollywood Hip two beds/smoking looking out to the roof and right next to the elevators...."ding ding" all night long.) I went back down and explained it to him, he said there were no king rooms left and put me on a list to change the next day. When I went to exchange the following day, they had given me the room type I had originally booked and said they "do not guarantee that the room you book will be available at check in." I explained to him my situation and that it was my third time standing in line for this. As a courtesy, he was able to put me in a "slightly larger room" but it did have a view of the Bellagio fountains. Quite a lot of work for the view. All in all, the hotel is a great place, and the rest of the stay was nice. Moral of the story...stay away from the newbies (not that you can tell.)

Checked in on a Sunday evening and had to wait about 10 minutes. I had used the 20 dollar trick at the Paris and ended up with a huge corner suite, so I decided to do the same at PH. As I gave the clerk the sandwiched $20, she saw it right away and quickly gave it back and said she couldn't accept it. She became quite flustered like she might get in trouble if anyone saw this exchanged. I put the $20 in my wallet and she stepped away from her computer, said something to the gentleman behind her and told me that we were being given a Hollywood Hip Room at no extra charge. She was very nice and the room was fantastic.

This was my first time to do this and it totally worked. I will say that I am a SPG gold status member and I'm not sure if this had much impact or not, but either way I was happy to get an upgrade during one of the busiest weekends of the year. As mentioned in other postings, the front desk person was presented with the stack (id,$20,creditcard) and then he separated the three and put it in full view above his computer. He then said, "let me see what I can do." He typed and typed and then pulled out a map to show me my options. I asked for a suite, but he said that they were all completely booked. I settled for the resort room upgrade, but understanding that it would take a few hours to clean up. I was fine with this. After we booked it, he looked down at the $20 and exclaimed, "Oh, is this for me?" hahaha
So again, who cares about whether I was spg gold or not and focus on the fact that I got upgraded on a busy busy weekend where resort rooms cost $500+ a night (july 4th) - and I used points!

Requested an upgrade - given a larger room (100ft2 larger) and a higher floor (17th) with view of Paris and fountains. Room was massive, with a big "entry area" enormous bathroom and very large bedroom area. Don't think it was a Hollywood Hip room, though.
Clerk was very gracious and I had to ask her to take the tip.

Checked in around 7:00 PM, only two people in line ahead of me. Wasn't expecting much because my friend had checked in earlier, and the #20 trick was a no-go for him.
A young woman called me up, and when she asked for my ID, I handed her the sandwich, and told her I was looking for a complimentary upgrade. She said the hotel was sold out this weekend, but she'd see what she could do. (She placed the $20 in full view on the counter and kept it there until checkout was complete.)
After typing furiously, for over 5 minutes, she came back with a "renovated room" and asked if that would be acceptable. I told her if that's all there is, but I was hoping for at least a Resort Room facing the Strip.
She started typing again, and found one. I said that was perfect, thank you, etc. And then, she started looking AGAIN. Found a better room. 20th floor, right over the pool, looking at the fountains. Best 20 bucks I've spent.
