As a disclaimer this is a second hand account of what actually happened. My friend went to go check-in while I was still driving to Vegas so I told him to find a younger clerk and sandwich a $20 between his credit card and license. He slipped the sandwich and asked for the complimentary upgrade. She immediately knew what he was asking for, messed around on her computer a little and got us a bigger room (bigger bathroom and bed space) with a view of Paris, the Bellagio fountain show, and the pool below. The best $20 we've ever spent in Vegas.

3 of us and our girlfriends went to Vegas for a few days. Us 3 guys went to the counter and were helped by a girl that must've been in her early 20's. She asked for all of our ID's and credit cards and we all did the sandwich trick so she actually ended up with $60. She was able to not only upgrade us all to resort suites, but she put us all on the same floor and my room had a really nice view of the Bellagio Fountain. It was really nice being able to watch the fountain show from our room. Definitely going to use the $20 trick wherever I go from now on!

I was a little nervous to try the trick, but decided it would be worth it on a 3 night stay. As I handed him my sandwhich, I began with "Are there any comple.." before I could finish, he finished my sentence and said he would take a look. He said he could upgrade me to a higher floor and view of the strip (Bellagio fountains) if I could wait for them to clean the room. I was told it would only take half an hour and he pocketed the money. 45 mins later I went to the key check in and was told that they conditioned the carpets are were waiting for them to dry and to come back at 3pm (std. check in time). I came back at 4 and the carpets were "still waiting to be dry". I demanded to talk to the manager and he moved us to a higher floor same room and view. We ended up on the 37th floor out of 38 with a great view of the Bellagio fountains. All in all, we still had the same room, but a much better view. (though I'm sure people get this view without the tip sometimes.) I'll probably try it again.

Had a resort view room reserved. Slipped the $20 between the cc and dr. Asked the clerk for a remodeled room with a great view of the fountains. We had to wait 2 hours for our key but they took the luggage and the key was there when we went back. Busy week too, it was the premier for Resident Evil.

Slipped a $40 sandwich due to staying almost a week. Upgraded to a resort room (560 sq ft, 42" plasma, huge bathroom) with a great view of the strip. Normally $80 more a night. Well worth it!

Only clerk available @ check-in which was early on a Thurs morning. $20 between ID and credit card with no verbal request. Told that no upgrades were available for entire stay due to busy weekend (1000 check-ins on Friday). After lots of typing were told that a high floor, fountain view was available and that it was normally $60 more/night. Well worth it for 4 night stay. The view was AWESOME!

Ok, first of all, I have been reading this website for a solid 5 months. I thought this was going to be easy.
I went up to the front desk, with sandwich in hand. I got a younger asian female. I gave her the sandwich and asked if there was any complimentary upgrades available. She said, 'No, im sorry, we are all sold out tonight'..and pushed my $20 back to me. I said.. ok.. 'Can I try back tomorrow?'. She said, 'Yes, you can try back tomorrow, but usually when we upgrade, we upgrade you to the room you have already booked, the Resort Room'. Knowing this is total BS, I got fired up pretty quick. Soon after, she told me she 'just didnt know' and acted like she was new. She said maybe I could find a nice enough manager to give me something. I left.
The next morning I woke up, and there was no hot water running to the shower, at all. Strictly cold. After 15 minutes of running the shower, it finally became luke warm. The TV didnt work half the time (kept turning itself off), and the hot water went out completely the last night we were there. If you turned on the facet, literally no water was coming out, just air. The entire 'room' experience was horrible... although the casino was great.

There was a line so the clerk was random. My wife and I walked up to the next available clerk and she asked for my name and ID so I handed her the sandwich. Right after she saw the 20 she knew the drill. Typing typing..."lemme see if we have any room upgrades"...typing typing..."we do have a suite available for you"...typing typing..."I see you pre-paid for the hotel through a package deal so I wont need to put a hold on your card"...feel free to trash the room.
She leaves for a couple of minutes and gives us our room passkey. The suite was sweet with a huge tub and great view of the strip and the fountains. Will definitely try this again.

Our flight came in around 10am so we went to the hotel to see if we could check in. There was a small line of people and we waited about 10min. There were multiple clerks checking people in and we were called up to the next one available. We had no choice who we got and we were right next to someone else. I am a very shy person and was very nervous to ask but I though what the hell we are in Vegas and its worth a try. We walked up to the clerk and he asked our name and then if we had a drivers license and credit card. I handed him the sandwich and leaned in to ask if there were any comp upgrades. He gave us a huge smile and said "we will take care of you!" he did some checking and offered the same type room with a view or a larger room without a view. We chose the view and let me tell you it was the right choice! The view was amazing!! You get a whole different perspective of the fountains from above. Our clerk also waivered the $5.95 nightly fee and asked if we needed late check out. So definitly try the $20 tip. It totally works!!!!! And it is well worth it! If they refuse they will give your $20 back so you cant lose!

it was easy. handed my license and credit card with a 20 slipped in between. asked if there were any upgrades available. she saw the 20 and said, "let me see what i can do." after about 3-4 minutes of typing at the computer, she told us she moved us to a room on the highest floor with a view of the fountains. worked great.

This is the second time for me at PH. Funny enough, I ended up checking in with the same lady as my first time. An older asian lady, possibly korean. My first time, she only upgraded me to a Resort Room. This time, I said I was there for my bachelor party.
She said nothing was available, but that she will check. Did the whole "let me check with supervisor" deal and came back. Got the Panoramic Suite

Our party of 4 arrived at PH mid afternoon after long flight from UK. Never tried the $20 tip before, so with apprehension approached the front desk and handed over our paperwork with the $20. Asked the clerk if an upgrade was possible as we were celebrating 2 birthdays and a wedding anniversary and would love a view of the Bellagio fountains. She said hotel was busy but would see what she could do. Left the tip in view and spent a few minutes typing furiously. Got 2 great rooms, tub bath and 42" screen tv with brilliant views of the Bellagio. PH is in the perfect location on the strip as its central to everything, but getting the great views too was the icing on the cake!

Checked in Friday night at 9pm for a 3 night stay. Checked in at hotel and was given the first clerk available. Sandwiched the $20 between card and ID. Didn't even have to ask for an upgrade, he knew and said "I'll see what I can do for you". He gave us an upgrade to the resort room and said it was usually $100/night upgrade. Room is fantastic and I can't believe the trick worked on a holiday weekend!!

Stood in line for about 15 mins. younger female clerk called me up. Had the twenty sandwiched between my i.d. & credit card and asked if any free upgrades were available. She smiled and said she would check. She noticed my wife was pregnant and she was very happy for us and said she was able to give us a strip view room. She was very smooth I watched her the whole time and didn't even notice when she pocketed the 20.

Approached SPG Elite Desk, desk agent was probably in his 30's....
Handed the sandwich over...at first he didn't notice the $20 bill but when he did he said 'oh', and I asked if there were any upgrades available, and he said 'let me check'. Unfortunately, most of the rooms were sold out that night (I was expecting that) but I managed to get my hands on a room with a WONDERFUL view of the Bellagio Fountains on the 31th floor!
I'd say this was a success...considering I booked on Priceline for $51/night!

Checked in about 4.30pm, not a very long queue but still took about 20 mins to be seen. Tried the tested technique - cc, $20 and drivers licence. Woman was a bit surprised and asked initially if I wanted change but soon clicked when I went bright red! Told her it was my boyfriends first time in Vegas. She tapped away for about 10 minutes and got us a choice of a king room overlooking pool, or a 2-queen resort suite room over looking fountains. We took the resort suite. Great room and a huge saving! Didn't see anyone else in the queue trying it but she had the $20 out in front of her the whole time and only pocketed it when she'd scored the upgrade.

Gave clerk the sandwich and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. He asked what I wanted. I asked him what he had available. He said, how about a larger room. I took his offer. He also gave us coupons and signed us up for the a list casino card. The $20 tip upgrades must be aloud by the hotel. Looking up above him you could see at least 4 cameras that had a view of everything he was doing. He also put the $20 on the counter like a a dealer puts money down on the counter for security to see. There's no way they could be doing this without the hotel security knowing.

At check-in slipped a $30.00 trick to the clerk and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. {maybe something suite? Wink!} Our check-in clerk slipped the green under her keyboard and set us up in this totally awesome room on the top floor overlooking the strip and the pools. The spa tub against the window overlooking the strip was too cool, especially with the fountain show directly below and a massive hd-tv next to the tub. Great ending to a day long buzz!

Walked up to the clerk, he asked for ID and credit card, I slipped him the $20 and asked if there were any available upgrades. It was obvious he had done this before, because he was able to quickly slide the $20 under his keyboard, leaving my check card and license out in view. He said he would see what's available and typed away. It took about 15 minutes, we carried on with casual convo during the process. He typed and typed and typed, scribbled down what looked like room numbers, and typed some more. He finally said he found something he thinks I'll like. I wound up getting upgraded from Hollywood Hip to a Resort Room in the North Tower on the 23rd (very top) floor overlooking the Eiffel Tower and Bellagio Water Fountains. Worked perfectly!

There was a super long wait at check out. I waited to make sure I got a male clerk. I Told clerk at check in that my wife was really up set for having to wait 30 min. to check in. I handed him the $20 sandwich and asked if he could give me a nice room to make up for the wait. Clerk looked around and upgraded me to a room on the top floor overlooking the Belliago fountains. Overall I would definitely try the $20 trick again.
