There was a small line, we ended up with a young lady. We checked in around 6pm. I put a $20 between my ID and credit card and the lady nicely said that they cannot accept tips for anything. So I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades anyway, she said 'sure i'll look'. We chatted a bit, and I mentioned that it was my boyfriend's birthday. I booked a Hollywood Hip for $79/night and got upgraded to a Hollywood Hip Premier experience on the 38th floor with a view of the Bellagio Fountains. (Got the "drinks on us" promotion, 2 for 1 buffet, 2 for 1 spa admission, money at the casino, 10% off dining) Even though the tip didn't work, I got a great upgrade for free. Never hurts to ask!

Checked in on a Wednesday afternoon just after 12pm. The clerk that was available was a male between 25-30. Did the sandwich with a $50 and even before I could ask for any complimentary upgrades, He thanked me and gave back the tip. Told me that they are not allowed to accept any tips, but really appreciated the gesture.

I have never tried this before, so I was a bit nervous. I handed the guy the sandwich and he quickly handed me back the $20 and said as of last week, they are not allowed to accept any tips any longer. He then went on to say that they were not very busy and that he would do what he can to give us a upgrade. He paid $69 a night for the hip room and we ended up with a room on the 22nd floor overlooking the Bellagio Water Fountains and got a free bottle of alcohol each night, for the the 4 nights we stayed there. These bottles are huge and range anywhere from $33-$45 per bottle!

Waited in line for 15 min. Did not get to choose agent. Gave her the sandwich and asked for a comp upgrade. She typed away and upgraded me to a resort room with strip fountain view. I asked if they had any panorama suite available. she said it would cost $200 more/nite. I said no it's ok. She said thanks for the tip and I left. Room had a very nice view, but was only on the 17th floor.

I got to the lobby at PH around 12:30pm and the check-in line wasn't too long, about 5 people ahead of me in line. I read stories from others where they really picked and chose who they would speak to, so I looked around and saw a younger caucasian man in his mid twenties. I was going to go up and ask him but because of the busyness everywhere I didn't get a choice and was directed towards a south-east asian man in his mid thirties who was standing directly next (maybe a foot) to the manager on at the time.
I had my passport and credit card sandwich ready with a $50 in the middle (i figured because i had two rooms maybe a bit more would help). He was very nice; I told him it was my 21st birthday and i was down with a few friends, then asked if there were any complimentary room upgrades available while handing him the sandwich. He noticed the $50 peeking out right away and placed my passport/cc to his left on the counter covering it up. After typing away into the computer for about a minute disappeared into the back for 3 minutes or so, and after returning he grabbed a binder from behind the counter and proceeded to explain the upgrade he was giving me. "This is what you have..." he said, pointing to the Hollywood Hip room "and this is what I can give you, one Resort Vista Room and one Resort Room." As happy as I was i was determined to try for a Panorama Suite, as I had seen other on this site get those and really wanted a nice room for my 5 buddies and I; so i asked "Is there any possibility I could get one of these (pointing to the panorama suite). It would hep out a lot, i'm here with a couple buddies and the space would really make a difference. He went on to explain "I have none of those available right now, the hotel lets half of those room be available to the public for booking and the other half it keeps for comps, I have none available." It was a bit of a vague response, as I wasn't too sure if he meant the had none available for comps, or if he had none available for booking and was keeping the other for higher-level-management casino comps. I then asked if I could return the next morning after check-out to see if any opened up and he told me to come back at 11:30 the next day, as he would be working. He made a point of saying "I'd really like to get you into a suite for at least one of your nights here, so come back and check."
The next morning i woke up at 11:15, walked down to the lobby and saw him working again. approached him with my passport with a $20 folded in the middle, again just peeking out. He remembered me right away and told me to hold on a minute, disappearing into the back once more. He returned with a large smile and said casually "I got you a Panorama Suite for the last 3 nights of your stay." He printed off my keys and told me the Resort Vista room was the one being changed to the suite, so i had to move my stuff from there within the next couple hours so they could clean it up. WHAT AN AMAZING SUITE!
I got the two Hollywood Hip rooms for around $110 a night. After all the upgrades it would have cost me almost $3,000 additionally if I had paid the difference. All for $70!
I love Vegas.

Arrived on a Friday around noon and decided to try to check in early. No lines at all. Passed the sandwich and asked for any complimentary upgrades. Clerked yes yes and after typing away for a minute, offered a Resort room. Room was bigger than the one I booked and had a huge bathroom, Also got coupons for a free bottle of "hooch" each day of the stay (got the Skyy Vodka each day). Given a bunch of coupons and match play coupons also. Definitely worth the tip.

We arrived about 10pm on a monday night. There were three clerks working, all were busy, but we were first in line. When we got called up, there was still an older man and his wife waiting at her station, i think they were trying to call someone for their booking information.
We handed her the sandwich, and told her we were on our honeymoon, and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She typed away, and then said she had to check what she had for non-smoking. She came back and said that all she could do for us was a strip view, with two queens, or we could keep what we had. We decided to take the strip view, and she said to come back tomorrow, told us her hours.
When we went back on tuesday around 2pm, she was not there, so we approached another younger female. We handed her the 20 with our id, and said "we checked in last night on our honeymoon, and they said to come back today and see if there were any complimentary upgrades available". She typed away for a bit, and then told us that what she had was actually a junior suite. We got up to our room, and were wowed! We could see the entire fountain show, had a comfy king bed, two flat screen tv's, and a really nice round soaker tub. We were thrilled!
Best of it all, we didn't book the "drinks are on us" promo, because we got a different deal, but they gave us the coupons anyways, so we walked out with 4 large bottles of liquor as well!

check-in date has been altered to protect the umm, innocent. Booked through the hotel website and had SPG eligibility, which already would have put me into a HH/view room. Arriving early, I did not know what to expect, but the sandwich and asking about additional upgrades beyond SPG got me a floor just below the top of the tower (above 20 but below 23, again to protect the umm, innocent) in one of the '80 rooms (overlooking the fountains, Paris balloon and the Eiffel tower).

Due to my work schedule, my flight did not arrive until 11pm, and by the time I got to the hotel it was almost midnight. Being a Saturday night, I thought it may hurt my chances for getting an upgrade, but decided to try it with a $50 sandwich- since we were staying a full week. There were 2 clerks doing check-in, and watched to see if anyone was asking for upgrades- which they weren't. After about 5 minutes of waiting on line, a male in his late 20's or so, waved me down to the other side of check-in, almost near the AVIS counter. I was pleased, because it allowed me the opportunity to try it without others hearing. Made small talk with him for a little bit, and asked if he had any complimentary upgrades. Still not noticing the sandwich, he stated he did. I was upgraded from a Hollywood Hip room, to a Resort Vista, on the 6thh floor (which we later found out the only view was that of the pool go-ers feet). Thoroughly pleased with getting the upgrade, (not knowing the view yet) I became more relaxed. Once the gentleman moved my license to the computer screen, he saw the nice crisp $50 sitting there. With a very shocked "Wow, Thank you!" I asked if there was anything more he could do for me. But being late in the evening on a Saturday night, he stated no, BUT to come back the next day, and he'll make sure he can do something for me. Sure enough, I went down, his shift had not started yet, but the lady who helped me, must have seen his notation on the screen, for she smiled greatly and said, "Here's your new keys. Enjoy the room!" Excited, my girlfriend and I went to the North elevators to the 22nd floor, found room 2280, and opened the door. What we found was a spectacular view of the Bellagio fountains (in action) and a wonderful view of the northern strip with the Eiffel tower right outside the large window above the soaking tub. Definitely the best $50 spent in Vegas during my trip!

I read about the sandwich trick on a few website's before I went to Vegas so I figured I would try it out. Worst case scenario is we are in the room we already booked. Me and 3 buddies flew down from Toronto on Friday night.
We got to the hotel at around 11pm and I ended up standing in the wrong line at first. After a couple minutes a manager called me over and asked for my ID and a Credit Card. I had the sandwich prepared and asked him if there were any upgrades available.
At first he told me they were completely booked, but after a minute he went to the back and brought out this little binder. He started working away and then pointed the binder to me. He said "this is what you booked" and pointed to the Hip room. He then said "this is what I put you in" and pointed to the panoramic suite. I had to do everything in my power to not start laughing with excitement. He then also gave us coupons for a free bottle each day we were at the hotel.
When we got to the floor we started looking for the room and kept getting closer and closer to this giant black double door at the end of the hallway. We started laughing saying "there is no way that this the room". Sure enough it was. When we got inside we dropped our luggage and freaked out. The room was unbelieveable. It was on the corner that faced the Bellagio, the eiffel tower and the Paris hotel. I don't think there is a better view of the strip.
The sandwich trick is amazing, It was a great great weekend. All thanks to the sandwich.

We checked in around 3PM that Sat. afternoon. The line is quite long and we waited for like 20 minutes. The lady that helped us seem to be around her late 30s and she also seemed like the supervisor on the duty. Initially I was wondering if this could work since she was helping other customers without a smile. But I was totally wrong, once she sees my $20 bill, she was surprised with a big smile. Without hesitation, I asked at that moment "do you have a complimentary upgrade?". Immediately she told me yes and said 'let me see what I can do for you'. It took her like 5 minutes to check and she asked our preference (smoking, bed) while she was looking for a room for us. I did ask her to see if we could get a nice fountain view of the strip. She replied 'that's what I am trying to find'. We ended up getting the same type of room but higher floor with beautiful fountain view of the Bellagio. Initially, I booked the room with city view. The process is very smooth and I really appreciate the lady's sincerity. The hotel is fully booked since it was a Sat. I realized that the fountain view room will actually cost me $50 more if I booked via the website. In my opinion, the sandwich works flawlessly.

Booked a standard Hollywood hip room for 8/2 thru 8/6/09. Arrived at PH around 830pm with no one in line. Walked up to first person. Gave her a 50 sandwich because I was in town for a bachelor party. She looked at it and asked what I was in town for. We chatted about the bachelor party for a min then she said let me speak to the manager and we'll take care of you. Upgraded from the standard room to a 1300 sq ft suite with 270 degree views of the Bellagio fountains and the mountains! 56in plasma in living room. Plasma in bedroom. Wet bar dining room, not bad at all for $59 a nite plus the $50. Looked online and room listed at 600 a nite during my stay. I love PH!!

Got to the hotel at 2:45pm. The lineup was aboslutely ridiculous to check in. Finally got to the front of the line at about 4:00pm. The young man at the front desk just explained the wait as unusual and for no real reason. Slipped the $20 sandwich between DL and CC and he automatically said that he would take care of me. He upgraded me from a Hollywood Hip at $59 to a Resort Vista room for all four nights.

Ok, I was checking in for a week with another couple so we allowed $50 would be enough. We went up and slipped it between the CC and PP, asked if there were any complementary upgrades, she smiled and said let me check. She offered Resort room, we tried for more but no joy. I was happy enough. She wavied the room fee also. Ended up with great room and great views, best money i ever spent.

Used VIP line since I did not want to wait in the long line. Used $20 trick with the young lady and she smiled as she proceeded to use her keyboard for a good 2-3 minutes. She then says I can put you in a resort vista suite immediately. Great view with 2 plasma tv's and plenty of room. We will be back to Planet Hoolywood !

Checked in on a Thursday night around 9pm. Had a 20 min wait. Did the $20 sandwich trick and he helped us out.
We get to choose what upgrades we wanted. Either a regular Hollywood hip room with high floors and great strip view or a low level Resort room.
We choose the bigger room, the view wasn't that important. It was a UFC 100 weekend and was busy. I think we could of gotten a better room on a non fight weekend.
BTW: This is the 2nd time that worked. Came here last year and posted a story.

Although two clerks were available when I got to the front of the line, I went with suggestions and picked the 30-something male clerk. (I was with a friend and we are both 30ish females.) After giving him my name, I handed him the ID and credit card with the 20 folded in quarters in between and sticking out at the end. I asked if there were any free upgrades available. He took the cards and deftly slid the 20 onto his desk. I explained that my friend and I had drove in from Southern Oregon (true -- it took us 12+ hours) and that it had been her birthday last week (also true). He asked if it was our first time staying at PH and we said yes. He proceeded to upgrade us to a fountain view room on a high floor AND waived the $5.99/day resort fee! What a guy. I was ecstatic. :) Thanks to this site for the invaluable "tip"!

My wife and I checked in at PH about 130pm on a Sunday. This was my second stay at PH, with the first try being successful at securing an upgrade.
There were a lot of Asian females at the counter. I was determined to get a Caucasian male, regardless of who called me up to the counter. Not being racist and I dont care wo likes it or doesn't...I'm just playing the odds.
Anyway, I got one of the two young, cool, friendly American males. I explained I was ther e to play in the WSOP and didnt want to stay at the dump Rio hotel. I handed him the $20 sandwich and said, " I am hoping you can find my wife and I a nice upgrade." He said, "I can take care of that for you". He laid the sandwich clearly in the area of the keyboard and began typing.
I had booked the basic room online at $89 per night.
He said" I have a nice Resort Room with a view of the Bellagio fountains on the 11th floor." I said, "That sounds perfect."
He popped the $20 into his pocket and began the process of checking me in.
I asked for a late checkout and we got that as well.
The room was awesome as usual. Large, clean, well kept and it smelled good.
Well done by all. :-)
Jeff
