Arrived at 6:00pm on a Thursday. After 5 minutes in line I was directed to the desk and greeted by a young, female clerk. Gave her a $25 sandwich and stated that I'd be grateful if she could do anything to make my stay more comfortable. She asked if I'd like change...told her "no thanks". After two minutes on her computer she gave me a room on the 38th floor with a view of the strip, while adhering to the low-floor/bad-view rate.

We went to Vegas for our 10 year Anniversary and booked the flight and hotel through Allegiant Air. Our flight arrived at 9:00 p.m. so we didn't get checked in 10:30 p.m.. Our front desk agent looked nice, so we slipped her $20 between the credit card and drivers license (aka the Vegas sandwich) told her it was our anniversary and asked if they had any complimentary upgrades. She typed on her computer and then said she would need to talk to the manager. She disappeared into a back room and when she came out we were sure it was a no. But to our surprise she said they did have an upgrade available and it was 2 steps up from the regular suite. It was AMAZING, it even had its own exercise room! Too bad I didn't pack my workout gear.
She asked if we needed change for the $20.00 and we said no and gave her an extra $10.00. Definitely worth it!

Note: There was a group of couples in line behind us during check in that were loud, drunk and obnoxious. They also asked for an upgrade and were denied. It's not rocket science, if you want an upgrade be polite and ask nicely, don't be a jerk.

Checked in about 9 pm on Thursday night. Handed the sandwich over and the clerk asked if I wanted change. I said "no, is there anything you could do to make our stay more comfortable?" Worked like a charm, great strip view on the 42nd floor at the very end of the hall on the north end of the hotel.

Received offer in the mail for "2-4 complimentary suite nights" at Venetian or Palazzo on "select value days." Couldn't believe this, as I am not a high-roller and only gave the V and the P brief gambling business the past two years, with small bets. Booked the comped suite for four nights starting on a Monday. Arrived, went to "Invited Guest Check-in." I was worried that I was two hours early before official check-in time (3pm). I am male, the clerk was female, approx. my age. I flirted a little by, complimenting her on her necklace, and presented DL, CC, and the $20 along with my reservation information. I asked for a room on a higher floor. She gave me a view on the 41st floor and I got early check-in! Well worth it!

I did the more subtle approach. I wanted to check in at 10:30am when the check in time is suppose to be 3pm. He asked me for my CC and DL and looked for a room. He told me there are no standard rooms available at this time but for 45 dollars I can upgrade to an available room with a view of the strip. I declined. As he returned my cc and DL, I kept my wallet open and asked him when does he think there is a room available. He caught my subtle hint and did some typing. He then excused himself to talk to the manager. A moment later, he came back and told me he got me a room on the 42nd floor. Excited I am. I gave him a twenty for his trouble. The view was awesome. I would do it again and again.

Couldnt wait to try this! Girl was very friendly and helpful. She immediately tried to return the tip and advised it wasnt necessary. I told her we were just interested in a complementary upgrade if available. She showed me some significant upgrade options and how much more per night, to which I declined. She then agreed to see what was available and located a Luxury View on the 10th floor. She asked if that would be okay, or if I would rather have higher. She found a Luxury View on the 40th floor that would soon be available if we could wait... I agreed. She again refused the tip and told me she was glad to help (she eventually accepted) She called me about an hour later to let me know everything was good to go. All I had to do was stop by and get the key to my upgraded room. Great room, great view.
at least an $80 value for giving a helpful person with a great attitude $20. pretty good deal!

worked like a charm. heard guy next to me get the same upgrade but was charged $45/nite in order to do so. i even think his clerk was snickering at what i was doing right next to him.

Got to the hotel at about 1:30pm, a little early (check-in is at 3pm). There was a short line and a gentleman directing people to which agent was open. Prepared the $20 sandwich in line. Got to the front desk and we were greeted by a young man about 25 years old. Gave him the sandwich and asked if there was anything he could do to "make our stay more comfortable." He said he'd take care of us. We then asked for a room on the corner with a view. After some typing he said a room at the end of the hall on the 45th floor with a strip view was available but wasn't ready so we'd get a call when it was. We left the bags with the hotel and went to lunch. About 30 min later our suite was ready.

Here's where it got tricky. When we got back to the front desk to get our keys the clerks were different so my leverage was gone. Our keys were programmed for a room on the 39th floor, which we readily objected to. He then found us a room on the 41st floor and we went on our way. We got to the elevators and just before we got in the clerk comes running and tells us he booked the wrong room, so back to the desk we went. Ended up getting a room on the 42nd floor overlooking TI and the pool. Nice view, but no strip view.

Moral of the story: seal the deal with the agent you tip.

i checked in around 3pm and had the sandwich ready to go. i was greeted by a male clerk around 30. he asked for my id and i gave him the sandwich and asked for a complementary upgrade. he said he would have a look. i then said i would really like two queens with a strip view. he typed for a minute and then asked if the 39th floor was high enough. i took the room and he gave me a $50 gambling credit, $50 drinking credit to LAVO and free admission to LAVO. the sandwich worked better than expected, the room was fantastic, got my money back in comps and it didnt matter that i booked on Priceline
