Got to nyny at around 3:00 on a Thursday. There were 4 women working check out two older two younger. I got a younger gal which I was glad. Walked up put sandwich on desk and asked are there any complimentary upgrades available for my stay. She said let me see what I can do. Presto she upgraded us and gave us a corner strip facing room. I thanked here left the 20 on the counter said that is for you and she thanked me. I will definitely try this again.

Flight landed at 8:30 AM so went to check in early and was greeted by Monica. She was great and very nice. I told her that my wife and I were there to celebrate our first anniversary and I was looking for an upgrade to a suite and slipped her the $20 between my license and credit card. She noticed it and set it on the desk while she worked to look for upgrades. She told me that suites would only be available for an additional fee/day, but that she could offer me a complimentary upgrade to a Madison Avenue room, so I took it. She then returned the $20 because the upgrade was complimentary. She was very nice. Maybe $50 may have been a better play.

We checked in on Sat. around 1:30 pm on Labor Day weekend so we weren't really expecting to get an upgrade on a holiday weekend. There was a pretty good line but it went fast and we were lucky to get a young guy. I handed him the "sandwich" and he said "Oh, is this for me?", I said yes and asked him if there were any complimentary room upgrades available. He said that he could upgrade me to the next level room with a strip view also. I thanked him and off we went to enjoy our vacation thanks to frontdesktip.com!!

Couldn't target the young guy I wanted to talk to, got a 40-something woman from the Philippines.
I gave her my friend's ID cause the room was in his name, then I gave her my sandwich w/ my ID & CC, saying I wanted to put the resort fee on my card.
When I handed the sandwich, I asked if there were any complimentary room upgrades available, and she said no first without looking at the computer. she said that all the spa suites were booked because of the Lady Gaga and Rush concerts that weekend. She checked on the computer, too. I even leaned over the counter and nudged my CC so that the $20 was more visible. She just ran all the info and then handed back the cards & $20 without ever acknowledging the money. Totally ignored it. FAIL

Checked in about 4pm on Saturday, there was a very short line, maybe 2 people in front of us. I didn't target a clerk, just figured it was worth trying with anyone. Handed the sandwich to a female clerk in her early 40's. She moved the license and the bill fell out in front of her. She said in a surprised voice "oh, is that for me?" I said yes and asked for an upgrade, she checked the computer and offered a spa suite if we were ok with a smoking room. Well worth the $20 and made up for the crummy weather this weekend since we could more or less hit the pool in our room.

We targeted a younger woman at around 4pm and gave her the sandwich. At first she was confused. I explained I was interested in comped upgrades and we ended up with a booklet good for some free drinks, free morning paper and a upgrade to the next level room with a strip view.

Got in after midnight. Only 3 people ahead of us and the line went quick. Gave the clerk my credit card and drivers license, but had the money in my hand. My wife asked if there were any available upgrades. I added, free upgrades. He checked and said he had one, but it was a smoking room. We took it and luckily it didn't smell bad at all. He even threw in a bunch of free drink coupons. At the end of the transaction, I thanked him with the $40. Was my first time asking and it worked beautifully!

Checked in late 11 pm - waited in line 90 minutes - only one clerk having a bad night - asked for complimentary upgrade none available - used the 50 trick - just looked at me and said no upgrades available - will not be staying at NYNY again - won't even gamble here - had better luck at TI last trip

Flight arrived late - after 11 PM - though this would be good for an upgrade - stood in line for over an hour only two clerks working the check-in line - approached available clerk - presented the sandwich with a $50 for upgrade - asked if any were available - told nothing was available - saw the 50 - looked at me upset - said she could place me in a smoking room - passed - room we received had a great view of the backside of the same hotel - service from front desk on was poor - did not even gamble here - will stay at TI next trip

I gave the $20 between my CC and DL and asked for the complimentry upgrade. The lady slipped back the $20 and told me there was nothing available (it was a Friday at 1200). My room was on the 30th floor looking out at the MGM. I was very satisfied with the view. I am not sure if this was an upgrade, but I was happy with what I got.

I slipped a fifty between the cards. She immediately agreed to upgrade and slid the fifty back with a smile. Because of the bad economy now is a perfect time to visit Las Vegas if you can. There are no crowds at all and the hotels have fantastic deals. I have already booked another trip for March.

Slipped $20 in the passport and since I stayed once before, I was able to make conversation saying how different it was while being checked in, and being very polite. I simply asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available, and she typed away, and got upgraded to a nice view of the Strip and got the $20 back as well!

checked in sunday @ 3pm. quite a few people in line.
slipped a $20 on my photopage of my passport. reservation was booked via travelocity sale @ ~25$/night (83 inc tax for 3 nights), so no need for credit card. told i could upgrade to broadway suite for $20/night or spa suite for $55. no complimentary upgrades avail.
ignored the 20 and handed it with my passport back to me.

clerk looked v official, placed passport and $20 asked for upgrade to higher floor and strip view.Said strip view would be $7.50 a night but could get us a higher floor. declined $7.50 a night as staying a long time after checking in clerk curious why $20 on top asked did i want change. embarressed left got room already booked.

We checked in around 8:30pm and there was a longish line. The woman checking us in was pretty young but very serious, all business, so I had a bad feeling about our odds of success. When she asked for id I placed the credit card, id, and $20 bill all on the counter together. She didn't bat an eye at the $20. At some point I told her it was my friend's first time in Las Vegas (which was true), and I asked if there might be any room upgrades available to make the experience more memorable. She immediately said the hotel was full, so all she could do was upgrade us from the lowest room (skyline) to one class higher (park avenue). However we had booked with an internet promotion on their website that was already supposed to get us the park avenue room, so this was not actually an upgrade. I took the $20 back. The eventual room was not that high and had a nice view of the construction next door. Oh well.

Asked about a complimentary upgrade. Clerk said that they were sold out and there were no upgrades available and returned the money.
He actually asked me if the money was for the complimentary upgrade and seemed surprised. He also worked a little extra time to find us a king, non smoking room even though he initially thought there weren't any available.

Im a hotel clerk a 20 can go along way, noise complaint to telling them in advance your gonna party tip the clerk and ask for something out of the way as to not disturb the other guests. Upgrades work like this too tip the clerk and then call the desk and ask if they can upgrade them to something nice that yould expected something "larger"..... BUt yes "tips" for the desk can get you almost anything you want... be nice and tip and you can get away with anything.

GAVE THE TIP ASKED FOR A PLAYERS SUITE SAID THEY WERE FULL, SHE DID UPRAGED US TO A MARQUIS ROOM WITH A CORNER VIEW WITH FLOOR TO CIELING WINDOWS OVERLOOKING BOTH NORTH AND SOUTH OF STRIP. WELL WORTH THE $20.00. WILL TRY THIS EVERYTIME.
