We probably should have tipped her but I personally do not think we would have been more successful even if we tipped. She was just in a very bad mood. After telling her we were on our Honeymoon and asking for a free room upgrade she tried to put us on the first floor in the west wing. We asked for the Grand Tower even though it had 2 Queen beds in every room. She put us on the backside of the hotel. I tried to go down later and get a different room but they told me they could not do anything because I was already checked in but they would have upgraded me if they had checked us in. I decided to wait until the next day around check out time. I went down and explained that we were on our Honeymoon and that our first front desk clerk was rude to us. After some negotiation with her manager they agreed to put us in a Premium view room. Took some haggling but in the end it was a nice room with a great view.

Supposedly was given a room with a better view (still a deluxe double bed) that did overlook part of the strip, and was given a $25 food credit and tickets into some bar.
Here is the problem, booked a room rate for three nights that was supposed to be like 350 total, go to check out and we get a ticket to sign saying 700 bucks!!! The original ticket we signed had the proper room rate, best we could tell they canceled our original reservation and made a new with the room with a view. We finally got is straight after they went back and dug out the original copy we signed. Needless to say, it killed 45 mins or so and we made it to the terminal just as they were closing the door.

We arrived at about 1:30PM, I took a quick look at the desk to locate the managers and decided to go for this clerk who wasn't too busy and had no one around. I placed the confirmation email on the desk and handed him the credit card with the $20 folded under it. I said "I'd like to check in, please, and I wonder if you have any upgrades available" or something like that. He took the CC with the 20 and I'm 99% sure he knew what's going on and what I'm asking for. He placed the 20 on the desk near the keyboard and said something like "I'd be happy to check that for you". He started typing, then said he needs to check something and went through a door in the back. He came back after a couple of minutes and said "Sorry, there's nothing I can do for you, but I can offer you an upgrade to a bungalow suite for $50/night". I didn't take it (paid enough for my room as it is). He suggested that I'd come down the day after and try again, but I didn't bother. I did not get my $20 back nor anything else people were describing (like champagne).
I went to him later to make sure I'll be able to get into the Studio 54 club through the VIP gate (it was a part of my deal), and he said no problem, he'll take care of it. We went to the club and of course they didn't have my name on the list. So I went back to him and asked him what's going on, he said to give him five minutes and try again at the club, and he gave me two vouchers for free drinks. We gave him 15 minutes but we still were not on any list. We ended paying for admission and when we checked out I made sure they refund us the money. The vouchers were useless since until we got inside it was 12:05AM and the barman wouldn't accept them after midnight.
West wing room was very small but very nice though, and my G/F was pleased anyway

Just approached the clerk at the front desk. I placed a $20 bill under my CC and ID just so the "20" could barely be seen and asked if there were any available upgrades. He asked for a second and a few seconds later asked me if the bungalow queen suite would do. Of course I accepted and went on my way.

Arrived at MGM front desk around 5PM. Did the usual, asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available and handed the clerk my credit card with a folded 20 sticking out from underneath. He told me that I was already getting the casino rate which was a really good deal to begin with. He then paused for a few seconds, checked and then said he could get me into a West Wing King Room. I've stayed in the West Wing on a previous trip...it is not really that much of an upgrade so I politely declined and just kept my original reservation. So then just handed him my credit card and I kindly replied "Thank you for checking."
The clerk however did give me a line pass for the buffet and one comp. admission pass to Studio 54 so I got a little something out if it.

I put the 20 between my CC and ID and she handed it back and said sorry I can't take this. What she did do though was give me a room high up with a view of the strip and free champane and strawberrys.

Was initially standing in line for a Male, but then he suddenly had a supervisor stand behind him. As soon as I saw that, I shifted to next lane that was somewhat isolated. I handed her my credit card and ID with the $20 bill in the middle, sticking out just enough for her to see it. I immediately asked her for a complimentary upgrade, she said she can definitely do something but will check to see what they have. Typed for a couple of minutes and then offered me the Bungalow Suite since it had the two beds... I asked her if she could switch to the Hollywood Suite and include a rollaway, she said 'sure, it would be my pleasure'... Once she was done that portion, I asked her for a dining credit... She typed away and thought for a bit and then said 'sure, no problem, I'll issue you a $25 dining credit, and you just have to make sure you charge your meal/buffet to your room'. That was about it! Took the keys and was off to the room.
**Not a big fan of the MGM at all. But had to stay here one night because of a sudden change in plans. Off to the Wynn next for a couple of days. Will post on how the trick works out there. *Crossing Fingers*

Went to Airport hotel Check-in. 2 Clerks and a Manager behind the desk. I shifted lines to the male clerk as the manager was near the female clerk. I handed license and credit card to clerk. He told me I would be on the 19th floor. I showed him a palmed $20 in my hand and asked him if there were any complimentary upgrades. He said: "of course there are" - I needed 2 double beds and he offered me a bungalow suite. He showed me a book w/ pictures of the suite and I slipped him the $20 as he was doing that.
I had booked through MGM using one of the September Codes for $69/night when I made my reservation.

My husband "handled" this.... he handed $20 to the young girl behind the counter, who had one older 30s guy behind her watching... she typed furiously on her computer for 3 minutes or so and came up with our room number... we got to the hotel AND HAD TO WAIT 45 MINUTES FOR OUR LUGGAGE after the shuttle bus, despite 3 calls to the bell desk... our room was on a high floor (24th) but the "view" consisted of the Hooters hotel parking lot. A TOTAL WASTE OF MONEY, arghhh!

We tried to pick the line with the person who would be the most likely to grant our request but no, that was not the case. The brunette was very cold and our request was answered very business like, as if she thought we may be paid by the hotel to check-up on them. Lots of bosses around watching their workers. Judging from most stories, it's very unlikely to get an upgrade at the MGM, perhaps some better luck at the airport.
Also, I am very skeptical of some results/review recently posted just sound too good to be true...read-up and you will know what I mean.

Checked in at the MGM-grand/"target="_blank">MGM Grand this Sunday night for five nights. I had booked the $69 member rate.
The lady at the counter saw my $20 and typed and typed for 10 mins and found a celebrity spa suite. She went for approval and was denied because the hotel was sold out and there was a convention with 3000 attendees.
She then gave us a room on the 28th floor with a view of the strip. I gave her $10 for her efforts anyway, she really did try hard to get us the room. Tough when the hotel is tight and I am staying 5 nights.
The bonus is that we get free wireless because we are one floor down from the skylofts which have complementary wireless and my laptop caught on to the signal. At least I saved $10/day on internet access.

The clerk was a young girl. She giggled at me and my GF and said "no, there aren't any upgrades" and handed back to me my $20. She then checked us in and gave us a room with a View, but it was a horrible view. Only good thing was that it was semi close to the elevator.
I would try again but not with a young girl.

When we first arrived the hotel was completely booked up (airport checkin even shut down early). It remained that way for nights one and two. On night three we talked to a nice young man at the front desk who was willing to help, but unable to that night, he said to look for him the following morning. We did just that, and he was able to do just that. We had three in the party and needed at least two beds, so only bungalow or marquee suites were options, and he said he wasn't able to get us in a marquee. Although it was only for 2 nights, the suite was worth it from my perspective. Since we were already checked in, I wasn't able to give him an ID or CC for verification, so I just did the old $20 handshake to make the transaction (he knew I had it though because I had it under our old room card with the money facing him.)

After getting to the room, I went back downstairs to give it one more try. I put the $20 out and asked about the upgrade. He started working away at the computer, but then once he saw how much I was paying ($69.99/night), said that there was no way I could get an upgrade because I had the casino rate. He said he hadn't ever seen a rate that low. I asked about the strip view and he said that there were none available. Then he noticed the $20. He asked if that was for him, I said it was. Then he took that, looked back to his computer and started typing away. He still couldn't give me a suite, but he did get me a 22nd floor room overlooking NY NY, Excalibur, Luxor, and Mandalay Bay. For 4 nights, that was worth it to me.

I just recently returned from spending 4 nights at the MGM. I checked it at the airport, and made sure to put the $20 visible underneath the card. When I asked about the upgrade, she didn't look at the bill, I'm pretty sure she didn't even notice it. She said flat no to an upgrade, and no to a strip view.

On a marketing deal for $50 plus some comps. Turned out to be a fightnight Sat the 15th. also my birthday. The $20 bucks cost me about 10 minutes of typing and phone calls. Then talking to Marketing. I was told my rate for $60, $120, and $60 was aleady consideraly low. Nothing could be done for a fight weekend or with my play. I let the chick keep the $20 for her efforts. Then about an hour later, in the room, a knock on the door. Champagne, and strawberries compliments of the hotel, and a gift basket from my host, with a bottle of Wild Turkey 101, my favorite and some snacks and a neat card. Thanks MGM for taking my money, and me enjoying it.

Stayed at MGM on June 29th & 30th. Went up to a young lady and slipped her my CC and ID with the $20 visible in between and asked her if there were any complimentary upgrades. She quickly smiled and said "No, I'm sorry." She took my CC and ID, and gave me back my $20 saying "Here, this is yours." So I'm pretty much embarassed at this point and just wait till she pulls up my room. She tells me she has a room with a view for me, so I thanked her and tipped her $5 for her effort anyways. The room had an OK view.. it was a view of the city area, not the strip.. so yea. But anyways..I'll try it again next time!

Arrived at the Vas Vegas airport on June 18th for 4 days at about 3 pm. Checked in at MGM Desk at the airport. Flashed my $20, and asked if he had any complimentary upgrades. The guy just smiled and nodded. Upgraded us from basic room to a Suite, with a strip view, and close to the elevator.
I was traveling with two other couples, all three of us staying at MGM, and all got upgraded to Suites by the same clerk. All tipped him $20.

I slipped the $20 under the credit card and got the 26th floor in a celebrity spa suite free of charge! We ended up paying the $59 for 1 night and $69 for the other 2 nights thanks to the SLM048 promo code.
However... a few things that irritated us: room service carts were constantly left outside of the room. One was there all three days we were! Ick! The doors under the sink at the wetbar didnt shut. Its like they were hung on the hinges incorrectly. Closet doors didnt open or close easily. Oh, and we think a maid stole a $100 giftcard out of my luggage (that was IN the closet). Spoke to head of security before we left and was told "sorry, nothing we can do." Called today and spoke to several people and got the same answer. Oh, I can file a report, but it will take 8-10 weeks and I was told "you have to call them. They WONT call you." So, yeah...
Overall, positive experience, but I think we will stay elsewhere from now on.
