I don't know why my review came up with FAILED when it was quite clearly a success. This proves you don't have to tip to get upgrades, be pleasant and friendly. Moments later I had upgrade and THEN I tipped and got a casino host & a limo. :)

Walked right up to the clerk at the airport check-in, no wait at all. He asked for my ID, which I took out and gave to him. Then he asked for a major credit card, which I took out as well as the folded $20 bill that I had ready to go. When I passed the card (and tip) to him I simply asked "do you have any complementary upgrades available?". He mentioned that they're really full due to a convention, yada yada yada (when aren't they BTW?) but that he would check for me. He put the card on the top of his keyboard (with the $20 still under it) and typed away for what seemed like forever (2+ minutes)... as he typed, the card inched downward to a point where the bill was clearly visible for all to see... it's obviously not a big deal for them to accept tips. Anyway, a few minutes later he produced a signature card for me along with the room key and some other info. After I signed (for the $69/night deal that I got online from them, which was a smokin' deal on it's on) he flipped open a small picture book with the various rooms in and told me that he was able to get the celebrity spa suite at no extra charge. I thanked him and proceeded to shuttle driver with my bag. I didn't have to tell him a story about a special occasion or anything (I was there alone), he just made it happen for the $20.

Last year I had success with the $20 tip at the MGM-grand/"target="_blank">MGM Grand Airport check in where I was upgraded to a Hollywood Suite. I was a bit nervous because I didn't think it would happen twice. I spotted the same clerk that I had last year who was super nice, so naturally I wanted to have her again. I let people go in front of me until she was available. I made small talk with her stating that she checked me in a year ago. I slipped her the $20 and this time she placed it on the keyboard, whereas last time she kept it covered and slipped it in her pocket. I didn't come out and ask for an upgrade this time, but she knew what I wanted. She did some quick typing and said that all the Spa suites were booked but that she could give me a bungelow suite on the 25th floor overlooking the Strip and I told her that would be great. I also told her that I was coming back the first week of April and she said that she would try to get me the Celebrity Spa Suite on my next trip. She was not trying to whisper at all, so I think it may be more acceptable to give upgrades at the airport check-in rather than the hotel. She also threw in two free shuttle passes.

I approached the desk and the clerk asked for my ID and Credit Card, I handed her both and as she was looking it over I brought out a twenty and had it on the desk - and inquired about an upgrade, she said she could give me a Bungalow suite, and I accepted and then tipped her the $20. The room was nice, however, beware - the shower heads are very low!

Put my $20 bill between CC and ID and put it on the counter and asked if I could get an upgraded room. Before I got a chance to give him a story that I just got engaged (True Story), he walked over to a computer a talked with someone and came back saying that unfortunately all the suites were full but he could give me a premium room with a strip view. I said yes, if it's not too far from the elevators (heard some of the rooms could be a long walk). It was a great room on the 26th floor and it was well worth $20.

Just as a note I also stayed in Paris, and Flamingo, on my trip each for 2 days and tried asking nicely with the "just got engaged" story and was turned down at both places, but could upgrade to a different room for a fee.

No Dice For agaethwe at MGM Grand...

I was in Vegas with three friends and thought I'd surprise them with an upgrade. Given that we had 2 rooms reserved, I thought I'd up the tip amount to $50. As I entered the check-in room at the airport I quickly scanned it for a good "mark" and thought I'd go for a 20-ish guy in the corner, but my friends, who weren't in on this thing, headed straight for the Asian woman in her early 30s smack in the center of the room. At that point, the die was cast, so I went with them, exchanged pleasantries with the woman, and then gave her my credit card and ID with $50 sandwiched in the middle, with a polite request for an upgrade. She then removed and pocketed the $50 so quickly and deftly that none of my friends, who were standing right next to me, noticed that anything was amiss. Anyone who said that there is no sleight of hand involved has not seen this woman! This was clearly a well-practiced move. Unfortunately, because she did it so quickly and surreptitiously, I'm pretty positive she didn't notice the bill denomination and assumed it was only a twenty. She then asked me what kind of upgrade I had in mind, I said "something with a hot tub" (going for the Celebrity Spa Suite), and she said she had to call and check. After a brief conversation on the phone, she informed me that the Celebrity Spa Suite would be $120 extra per room per night, or she could offer me a Bungalow suite for $80 extra per room per night. At that point I was out of options, so I said, "how about something with a view, then?" She replied, "sure," and gave us keys for relatively high-floor Grand Tower Rooms. She did not offer to give the $50 back, and was pretty cold and businesslike throughout the whole thing. When we got to the hotel, we discovered that the rooms had a rather mediocre view of the south strip. We probably could have gotten this "upgrade" if we just asked nicely, so overall it was a total loss of $50.

Lessons learned:

1) If you're doing this with a bunch of friends, make sure they're in on it, or they might do/say something to screw it up.
2) My original instinct to go for the guy in the corner was probably correct, so trust your instincts.
3) If tipping more than $20, make sure the clerk sees the bill.
4) Don't do this at MGM-grand/"target="_blank">MGM Grand! I was unaware of this at the time, but apparently they can fire their employees for accepting money for upgrades (See the update at the beginning of this thread).

No Dice For DealAddict at MGM Grand...

Like everybody else, had $20 between CC and ID. Asked for any complimentary upgrades. I also mentioned about this being my wifes first visit and we recently got married (this is true), she came back with an offer to upgrade to Celebrity suite for additional $50 a day. I was not sure I wanted to pay more. Then she asked if I wanted to switch to West Wing for free. I did not take it either based on what I have read. She then gave us a Grand Tower on the 15th floor with a decent view of Excalibur and New York New York. She did give the $20 back. I should have tried checking in at the Airport. I did not realize that I could have checked in at airport. Oh well.. we still had a great time...

We headed to vegas early in the morning and checked in at 11am. My friend let me handle it since I was the one who had been reading about it here on fatwallet. I chatted him up a bit obviously mentioning it was my girlfriends birthday, etc. When he asked for my card I had the 50 dollar bill between my card and id. When he noticed it he actually mentioned it was there and I said "I know its for yourself. We were hoping you could offer us some rooms you think we would like" He got right to it upgrading us both to 1bedroom suites($200 more a night) on the top floor, right next to eachother and with great strip views. He also asked if we were headed to any clubs and we mentioned we were going to check out Pure. He said Tao was a much hotter spot and picked up the phone and got us on the list, no line, no cover. It was great. Tao rocked.

When sunday came around my girlfriend and I decided to stay one more night and called Ceasars Palace...

Just slipped the clerk the $20 and asked if there were any complimetary upgrades so I can surprise my girlfriend. He saw the $20 and smiled and said he would see what he could do. Upgraded me to a Hollywood suite but said he was sorry because it was only on the 4th floor with no view. I said that sounds fine and it was a done deal. Very easy and a great suite.

I ended up checking in at the airport since my baggage claim was right next to the check-in and there was no one checking in at the time. I handed the girl my id with the $20 like everyone else. As soon as she saw it, she came right out to tell me how busy it was this week because of New years and the UFC fight at the hotel. I told her I realized that, but if she could do anything it would be great. (I already knew this would be a challenge, because of the week, and this was why the rooms cost so much in the first place)
She typed away while we talked, and she got me a room on the 26th floor facing the strip. Then we talked about New Years and work and kids, etc. The next thing I know, she is telling me that she has a way to take off $100 from the last night's rate. I was extremely happy with this and thanked her over and over. Then she got on the phone and did some more typing, and told me she could take another $50 off the third night's rate.

I couldn't believe it. I ended up saving $150 and getting a great room with a view all for $20. pretty good return on investment as far as I was concerned

We probably should have tipped her but I personally do not think we would have been more successful even if we tipped. She was just in a very bad mood. After telling her we were on our Honeymoon and asking for a free room upgrade she tried to put us on the first floor in the west wing. We asked for the Grand Tower even though it had 2 Queen beds in every room. She put us on the backside of the hotel. I tried to go down later and get a different room but they told me they could not do anything because I was already checked in but they would have upgraded me if they had checked us in. I decided to wait until the next day around check out time. I went down and explained that we were on our Honeymoon and that our first front desk clerk was rude to us. After some negotiation with her manager they agreed to put us in a Premium view room. Took some haggling but in the end it was a nice room with a great view.

Supposedly was given a room with a better view (still a deluxe double bed) that did overlook part of the strip, and was given a $25 food credit and tickets into some bar.

Here is the problem, booked a room rate for three nights that was supposed to be like 350 total, go to check out and we get a ticket to sign saying 700 bucks!!! The original ticket we signed had the proper room rate, best we could tell they canceled our original reservation and made a new with the room with a view. We finally got is straight after they went back and dug out the original copy we signed. Needless to say, it killed 45 mins or so and we made it to the terminal just as they were closing the door.

No Dice For Moooshe at MGM Grand...

We arrived at about 1:30PM, I took a quick look at the desk to locate the managers and decided to go for this clerk who wasn't too busy and had no one around. I placed the confirmation email on the desk and handed him the credit card with the $20 folded under it. I said "I'd like to check in, please, and I wonder if you have any upgrades available" or something like that. He took the CC with the 20 and I'm 99% sure he knew what's going on and what I'm asking for. He placed the 20 on the desk near the keyboard and said something like "I'd be happy to check that for you". He started typing, then said he needs to check something and went through a door in the back. He came back after a couple of minutes and said "Sorry, there's nothing I can do for you, but I can offer you an upgrade to a bungalow suite for $50/night". I didn't take it (paid enough for my room as it is). He suggested that I'd come down the day after and try again, but I didn't bother. I did not get my $20 back nor anything else people were describing (like champagne).
I went to him later to make sure I'll be able to get into the Studio 54 club through the VIP gate (it was a part of my deal), and he said no problem, he'll take care of it. We went to the club and of course they didn't have my name on the list. So I went back to him and asked him what's going on, he said to give him five minutes and try again at the club, and he gave me two vouchers for free drinks. We gave him 15 minutes but we still were not on any list. We ended paying for admission and when we checked out I made sure they refund us the money. The vouchers were useless since until we got inside it was 12:05AM and the barman wouldn't accept them after midnight.

West wing room was very small but very nice though, and my G/F was pleased anyway

Just approached the clerk at the front desk. I placed a $20 bill under my CC and ID just so the "20" could barely be seen and asked if there were any available upgrades. He asked for a second and a few seconds later asked me if the bungalow queen suite would do. Of course I accepted and went on my way.

No Dice For "James" at MGM Grand...

Arrived at MGM front desk around 5PM. Did the usual, asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available and handed the clerk my credit card with a folded 20 sticking out from underneath. He told me that I was already getting the casino rate which was a really good deal to begin with. He then paused for a few seconds, checked and then said he could get me into a West Wing King Room. I've stayed in the West Wing on a previous trip...it is not really that much of an upgrade so I politely declined and just kept my original reservation. So then just handed him my credit card and I kindly replied "Thank you for checking."

The clerk however did give me a line pass for the buffet and one comp. admission pass to Studio 54 so I got a little something out if it.

Was initially standing in line for a Male, but then he suddenly had a supervisor stand behind him. As soon as I saw that, I shifted to next lane that was somewhat isolated. I handed her my credit card and ID with the $20 bill in the middle, sticking out just enough for her to see it. I immediately asked her for a complimentary upgrade, she said she can definitely do something but will check to see what they have. Typed for a couple of minutes and then offered me the Bungalow Suite since it had the two beds... I asked her if she could switch to the Hollywood Suite and include a rollaway, she said 'sure, it would be my pleasure'... Once she was done that portion, I asked her for a dining credit... She typed away and thought for a bit and then said 'sure, no problem, I'll issue you a $25 dining credit, and you just have to make sure you charge your meal/buffet to your room'. That was about it! Took the keys and was off to the room.

**Not a big fan of the MGM at all. But had to stay here one night because of a sudden change in plans. Off to the Wynn next for a couple of days. Will post on how the trick works out there. *Crossing Fingers*
