Did the $20 trick at the airport check area. No problems at all, got the upgrade from a standard, not view room to a petite suite with a strip view.
Checked in around 3:45 PM Vegas time on a Thursday.

I nicely asked the clerk for a room with a separate tub and he checked and upgraded me. I was also given a $25 credit for food and drinks, a pass to Studio 54 and two free drinks in the West Wing Bar. I had the twenty bewteen the license and credit card.
Having the huge jacuzzi tub made my two days there heavenly. I didn't use the shower once, lol.
Loved the pool area and the entire hotel. It's huge but thanks to the overhead signs, easy to find the pool and restaurants.

I had asked for any available upgrades and was told that they were all out of them. She asked if I would like the $20 tip back but I told her that it was for her (I always figure that good joo-joo will come back to you in Vegas, and a lot of it has to do with tipping). Loved the MGM-grand/"target="_blank">MGM Grand and will always try to stay there from now on. The $2600 I won this trip will keep me coming back for a long time to come.

I checked in with a friend who also had a reservation - we slipped her a $50 for both rooms, which she immediately noticed. She was real nervous, but when I asked if there was an upgrade, she started typing away and bumped us up. She was real nice, although I think she knew she shouldn't be taking the tip. Her boss was walking around, but never said anything.

I didn't want to have the same experience as in the Orleans, I gave tip on checkin asking for a high level room with strip view. The clerk seemed to be surprised but we had a nice room. She didn't ask for my Player Card despite the package's condition.
PS: I had to come later because room was not ready. At this time another clerk (who place you in the queue at the counter) tried to change the room under the pretexte that the room was not ready. I thought (it becomes paranoia) she maybe was looking for a tip?! I refused and had to wait 1 hour more but I had my room.

The computers were down and they were doing check in old school style manually. So I performed the trick as called for by protocal and he immediately placed it back on the counter in front of me. I just left it there.
I just kept looking at him as he was fidgiting around behind the counter. Then he said, I can give you the Celebrity Spa suite for an extra 30 per night. I said ok because I made the reservation on a 59 per night deal anyways. Thats less than 100 for that suite, good deal right?
The nice thing is I never got billed for the extra 30 per night because I kept checking my credit card....AND I got my 20 back. Win-win situation.

Sliped 20 dollar bill under creditcard at check in, and asked if any upgrades available. Clerk slipped 20 dollars down by computer and typed away for a couple of minutes. He then showed us a picture of the room we were suposed to get and then the picture of the room we were geting. Worked great.

I read about the the high success rate at the MGM-grand/"target="_blank">MGM Grand airport check-in counter so I decided to give it a try for the first time. I placed a twenty underneath my credit card and slipped it over the counter. I asked if there were any upgrades available and slid the credit card/bill over. He gave me the the typical "I'm sorry, there's a big conference this week" and discreetly took the credit card from the counter along w/ the twenty underneath and then placed the twenty on his keyboard. He never once acknowledged the tip and simply gave us the standard room we booked! In the end, I lost the twenty and got a typical room on a mid-level floor, so a general disappointment.
Overall, I'd say the MGM-grand/"target="_blank">MGM Grand was OK, though I'd probably try another hotel the next time I went and not so sure I'd attempt to tip the front-desk clerk again.. :S

Did the bit exactly as described - between ID and card - asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available -- the woman knew exactly what I was looking for. She spent maybe 2 minutes looking and said she didn't have any suites available (I find that hard to believe) but that she could get me a room in the West Wing instead of the regular Grand Tower. She was nice and said that these rooms normally go for $100 more per night. Stupidly I said okay and she happily kept the $50.
We went to the room - what a horror. So small and dark - very depressing. The bathroom reminded me of an airplane restroom. Basically it's a room just big enough for a bed - no windows except for a tiny one above the bed. It was awful. I called the front desk and requested another room. They booked us back into the regular Grand Tower. We were supposed to be in a non-smoking room, but there was a nice cigarette stain on the couch.
Although this isn't really about the tipping deal - I wasn't too impressed with the MGM - the smell of the deodorizer was absolutely disgusting. The food was okay - although Wolfgang Puck's restaurant was incredible....awesome. Next time though, I'd stay the Mirage.

No Dice For Marc at MGM Grand...

Was at MGM 4/19-4/23 and used the airport check-in and $20 trick. Actually gave $40 since we had two rooms.
Unfortunately I did not get an upgrade. Couple of things...it was REALLY crowded at check-in and there were three attendants (two female/one male). The guy was super friendly and the two girls, well, were not. I got the middle girl and tried to make friendly chatter and when she asked for ID and credit card gave her both with the $40. I asked if they had any upgrades available and she typed for about 5 seconds and said she was very sorry but the hotel was completely sold out. I did get two connecting rooms in the Grand Tower on floor 17 which were six or so doors down from the elevator so not too bad. Also the view of the Airport was kinda cool.
Anyway she gave me back my $40 but could not get us the upgraded room. I think if it was less crowded at check-in (she did not want to waste time checking for me) and if I had gotten the guy on the right I would have been home free...

Really basic and successful 20 dollar trick, the guy knew immediately what i wanted, tried a new trick by placing the bill horizontally between the credit card and license plate so it was very obvious, didnt even need any to chit chat, he immediately said im looking for a nice suite for you without me asking for upgrades, found this one immediately, no manager around, I think the airport checkin upgrade is going up there with the Aladdin and Hilton for highest success rates, the spa suite is really nice

Arrived in Las Vegas (we drove) before 10 AM on Monday. Checked in around 10:30 and did it like everyone else except I had the $20 on top of both cards. She saw it but kindly gave it back and smiled. I then asked if there were any "complimentary upgrades" and she said she was looking as she was typing into the computer. She also did not ask for a Players Club Card, she just asked for my last name. Unfortunately, there weren't any suites available so I then asked if the room given to us had a nice view and she looked one up and gave us a room on the 24th floor (out of 29). However, she did offer a room with a King Size bed in the West Tower or something but had to decline because we had a total of 4 guests. So we just took the Grand Tower room w/2 queens and I must say, the beds, pillows, comforters in the room were absolutely comfortable. The view from the room had us looking all at NYNY. We were on the left side of the hotel (the side where the lion is mostly at).

Basically same situation. When he asked for my ID I slipped him the $20 and he right away said "Thanks Mr. xxxx I'll see what I can do" before I could even ask for an upgrade. He typed for like 10 minutes occasionally shaking his head and swearing under his breath. He would also write down what looked like room numbers and would take them to what looked like a supervisor. After about 20 minutes of this he said "Sorry we are all out of suites", and gave me a room on the 16th floor which he said had a nice view. He also gave me a VIP card and a contact at 54, which "would take care of me". He was very nice and seemed disappointed he couldn't help me. The room was OK, mainly a view of the construction that's going on in the center of the strip. The VIP card was nice to have though at check out cause it allowed me to pass everyone up.
