No Dice For Lindey at MGM Grand...

Checked in at 9pm on Friday after our plane landed. Showed the 20 in between the CC and Drivers license and asked if any complimentary upgrades available. Clerk smiled and gave the 20 back to me and said no sorry we have zero suites available. I asked him for a decent view and he said all he had left was lower floors. Was put in room 12-231 which was a halfway decent view of the back of the strip. He said to come back at 930 the next morning for room change with a better view but we never did.

Airport check in - I was the only one in line - I think I went to a manager and I thought about aborting mission - I might have screwed up the order I said my wife and I were celebrating our 1 year anniversary (true) and if there were any suites available - then I showed the license CC with the $20 sticking out - I was shot down pretty quickly - told there was some type of convention in town and they were sold out - was given a non smoking room which I am currently typing from - nice room and a great rate from fat wallet (avg $85/night)

Jackpot! Oai Truong Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

Arrived close to midnight, myself and three friends with a reservation for 2 rooms for 3 nights. 5 female desk clerks working but was ushered to a male clerk just as he was starting his shift. Slipped him the $20 when asked for ID and I asked if there were any complimentary room upgrades available. He said that would be tough since there was a big tradeshow in town, but offered us 4 free buffets right away. He then disappeared for about 10 minutes to check with his manager about the rooms and manages to find us alternate rooms with a better view. Not much of a room upgrade but we enjoyed the 4 dinner buffets the next night worth $120 for only $20!

Checked in at the airport, there was no one in line and about 5 Front Desk workers. It's kinda a small area, so I approached the first one that acknowledged me. Told him I would like to check in. He asked for Credit Card and ID, so I passed this to him with the $20 in the middle. I know he had to have seen it. I know the guy standing next to him did. I did not ask for an upgrade. I figured that he would have enough sense to know what it was for. He thanked me about three to four times, so I figured everything was taken care of. When we got to the hotel, we went to the room and it was a regular room. Next time I would definitely ASK if there were any comp. upgrades available. The only thing they can say is no, and if you are going to lose the $20 anyway, might as well ask. I was using the fatwallet promo code for $89 for two nights and $69 for one night, so I still got a good deal. Plus, if you sign up with the players club and you play poker in the poker room for more than 4 hours, they will take $40 off your room rate. For me, they said $89 was the lowest that they could go, but they took $20 off of one night anyway. You have to get them to do this at the poker room. Also, check the threads for Blue Man Group promo codes. This was an awesome show. In the threads, it is listed as Ble Man Group.

I have been reading this thread for a while, and I have noted the Airport check-in to be the best bet for the MGM. Had to ask where the airport checkin was - it is on the far end of the luggage area. There were three people checking in and a female who looked like a manager right next to the guy that called me over. I was nervous as heck, but managed to get the ID and credit card in place with the $20 sandwiched. The problem was, that he took them all, but couldn't see the money, and the only hint that it was there was a small raised space between the cards that I kept looking at to make sure he saw it. I asked him straight away if there were any complimentary upgrades, and he went to work. While putting my info into the computer, he must have switched the position of the tip, as the ID was moved and the money was now under the credit card. He was very cautious to keep the money hidden, and only exposed it when he went to slide the credit card through the keyboard. I signed the paperwork, and looked up to see my ID and CC on the counter. He was pretty slick, and knew what I was wanting.

I DO have a horror story about the MGM though, which involves a not-so-cleaned up room, some women's underwear found underneath our bed, some complaining, and a complimentary breakfast buffet for me and my wife. This situation could have turned out pretty darn ugly, and I'm not sure if a free buffet was all that I should have gotten. Not only that, but we waited in the hallway for 20 minutes TWICE while a maid was cleaning our room. MGM may be out next time we travel to Vegas...

I was looking pretty good before checking in and I was attempting an early check in. Pulled the $20 trick, which I was so excited to try. Anyways, I told the lady that it was me and my girl's anniversary and an upgrade would mean so much. Trust me, I am in sales, and I have crazy charm. So I had everything working for me. But despite the $20 and the charm, she informed me that the hotel is full for the weekend because of UFC, Beyonce, and FIBA. Anyways, she gave the $20 back to me, and told me the best she can do is give me a room with a higher floor than the initial booking (ended up on the 20th) with a view of the strip. I gave her the $20 anyways because that's how I roll. By the way, just a warning, dont try the $20 trick at the clubs, they will laugh at you. I did it at Pure (even with a table reservation), they just laughed at me, and told me to join the other line. You have to do it real big in Vegas.

No Dice For Randy at MGM Grand...

Checked in around 4:30 pm for 3 nights. Gave the clerk my ID, CC and $20 in between. She did not touch the folded $20, instead placing it on the counter w/ my CC. When I asked about any complimentary upgrades, she said that none were available at the moment, but I could check back in the morning. We did end up with a room that looked north towards the Bellagio.

Jackpot! Molly Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

I was very nervous to try the $20 trick but after reading all the reviews on here, I thought, "Why not?"

I checked in at the airport because I thought I would get more success there. There was no line-up and I could not see anyone, like a manager, standing behind any of the agents. I went to the far left agent and he was a very polite Asian fellow. I handed him the $20 between my DL and CC and was very specific for what I wanted. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades to a bungalow suite. At first, he winced and said "I don't think so" but after he spotted the $20, he said, "Let me see what I can do". He placed my CC, $20, and DL on the keyboard. He asked me if I needed two beds (which I did need) but I said that a king would do with a roll-away cot. I looked away for a second and when I looked back, the $20 was gone! Man, they're fast! He said that he only had a smoking suite available but that is what we wanted anyway. (By the way, we always smoke outside our room so we don't stink up the room but when we entered the room, it didn't smell like smoke at all!) We ended up getting a two queen bungalow suite on the 6th floor, room 104. It didn't have much of a view but I feel it didn't matter considering the size of the room! It had two queen beds, (which are the most comfortable beds - EVER!), a living room area, 2 tv's, and a bathroom with double sinks and separate tub and glass shower. Our room was also located close to the elevators.

I would highly recommend trying the $20 trick at the airport - the hotel lobby is WAY too busy! You may have better success at the airport where there isn't as much supervision. Good luck!

Jackpot! Craig Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

Airport check-in ~1230, I was the 3rd guy in line. Gave my name and asked if any complimentary upgrades were available. He said yes before I even showed the $20. I explained it was my wife's 50th birthday and he showed me a picture of the Celebrity Spa Suite, said "This is what I have for you and the room is ready." I presented the ID with the $20.00, he said thanks!
I never thought this would work for us. This was our first time @ the MGM and I only had a few points on our Player's cards. By far the airport check-in was the way to go. When we got to the hotel the lobby was swamped and I don't think we would have received an upgrade.

Big thanks to this site for all the info!

Jackpot! Alan K Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

My visit was a 4 day stay (Fri-Tue) at the MGM. Before arriving, I called room reservations and asked about suite availability. They told me they were sold out. That coupled with the low success rate reported here and on another site, I didn't expect an upgrade, but thought I would try anyway. Upon arrival, there were around 20 check in stations open. I selected one far away from the office, showed my ID and CC along with the $20, and was surprised to get an upgrade from my standard Grand Tower room to a King Bungalow Suite. There was one drawback in that it was on a low floor with almost no view. The agent then gave me some useful insight to the dining credit that I had with my original reservation, and a few other useful tidbits that I wouldn't typically expect. He was so congenial, I added another $20 (but this was after he had already given me the upgrade, and I easily could have walked away without providing the additional gratuity).

Jackpot! avenash Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

First, sorry for not knowing the correct room names, I've looked everywhere and can't find the receipt or confirmation.

Anyway, booked two basic rooms with double beds for $69/room using link from FatWallet. At airport found checkin desk (it's at baggage claim).

Since I was tipping for two rooms I chose to tip $50 instead of $20 (since glancing at two twenties might look like only one twenty).

So as described throughout this thread, I put the bill under my driver's license and asked to be checked in. When the guy took the ID, you could see him feel the money, you could see him register that something was there, and he immediately went to work. I didn't even ask, he just knew what to do. We wanted one queen bed per person, since we were four dudes, so that limited our choices of suites (I guess there's only one type of suite with two beds in it?) We wound up with a suite and a room that connected to the suite on the 20th floor.

The suite had two beds, a couch, two tvs, and a nice bathroom. The connecting room was actually a handicap room...I think because of this, the bathroom was bigger in smaller room than in the suite so I think everyone got something extra. We didn't care about the view but we were looking at out the back of the hotel...it was nice to see the mountains I guess. We were the second and third doors from the elevator, so we didn't experience any of the long walks that others have mentioned about the hotel. While we were on a smoking floor, it didn't bother any of us so all in all we were happy and I will definitely stay in MGM again.

So the moral is, you're missing out if you don't try, cause this tip on tipping really works. I felt like an instant winner. G'luck and thanks to all the previous posters who contributed to this amazing thread.

No Dice For Graham at MGM Grand...

Checked in at the airport around 8 pm. My gf and I were staying for a week so I figured an upgrade would be kind of tough. I offered 40 to compensate and the lady looked but said there really just wasn't anything. She then kept looking and made a call and did get us a room with a view and gave me passes for the shuttle. I gave her 20 for the effort. I think if we were staying for a shorter time it would have worked. Had a great stay however and really did enjoy our view.

Worked well for an upgrade to the next level room with decent South Strip views. $20 folded in between. Asked about complimentary upgrades after a few seconds but she new what was up, money disappeared like slight of hand as she whipped out the book that showed our upgraded room.

No Dice For Tom at MGM Grand...

Checked in after 6:00 at hotel and did the trick just right, the clerk asked if the $20 was for an upgrade, and then said unfortunately there was nothing available and handed it back to me. She was very polite.
She cofirmed that we had a non-smoking room, but when we got to the room it had obviously been smoked in. I called the front desk and they said they didn't have anything to move us to, but that after check-out the next day they would take care of us. And true to their word they gave us a comp upgrade to a bungalow suite. So we got the upgrade without the $20.

I arrived at MGM at around 11am and all the check-in lines were about 4 people deep. I scouted out the agents and found a young cute girl. After standing in line for about 10 minutes, a manager came and moved me to another line across the way. I stood there for about another 10 minutes when another agent opened the station next to her and called me over. He was a younger asian man woth very short hair (possibly shaved). I know his name but don't want to get him in trouble. He asked for my ID and Credit Card and I gave it to him with $20 sandwiched in the middle. I asked him exactly this: "Any chance of a free upgrade to a Hollywood Suite?" He smiled at me and proceeded to look at his computer. A manager all of a sudden walked behind him and he quckly took a piece of paper and covered the $20. It was obvious he was trying to hide the $20 from her, but she didn't see. Next thing he said was that my Hollywood Suite would be ready in an hour. He didn't have to ask any manager for permission. Hollywood Suite was a great room. Would definitely go back.

No Dice For p1668 at MGM Grand...

I arrived at MGM at near midnight and there was a short line with about 7-10 reps. I handed her my $20 folded in between the credit card and driver license when I was asked for it and at the same time ask for an complementary upgrade. She interrupted me for a second and saw the $20 and smile and placed it on her keyboard. She must have knew right away of what was going on and typed at the keyboard for about a minute and I was told they are all booked tonight. At the end, she gave me my $20 back and told me to try again the next day early in the morning. But I passed.

Tried with a young woman who was all smiles, she noticed the 20 and put it on her computer and started typing. After a minute or so, she offered me an upgrade for 25 a night. I declined and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available, to which she replied no. She didn't even offer any rooms with a decent view. To top things off, she asked if I wanted the 20 back and I just told her to keep it since things were already feeling awkward.

No Dice For Owen at MGM Grand...

My GF and I tried it with a $50 since we already had a suite for 5 days at $130 each night. My sister does convention services for most of the large banks in the country so MGM-Mirage brings her out about 3-4 times a year and comps her MGM-grand-the-signature/"target="_blank">The Signature and skylofts so she got us the room through her business connection. The clerk at the airport told us that since we already had a deal we might not be able to get a complimentary upgrade. She said we already had a great view of the strip(she was right about that)and her advice was to stay where we were at, so we did. We don't think she really noticed the $50 we put in front of her since she didn't look anything up on the computer. My GF was smart enough to put that money back in her pocket once she saw it was not looking like it was going anywhere. We are probably going back in December to stay at TI, at least that's the plan, and will try it there. We don't spend that much time in the room anyway since we like to gamble but we just think it's fun to try and see what we can get.
