Jackpot! Rich Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

Didn't ask for an up-grade. Just handed him the $20 bill and asked for anything he could do for us. He gave us a room on the 26th floor 26-101 very near the elevator. Also gave us a 'line pass' and 2 extra buffet meals.
Also, on check out day asked for a later check out and handed the clerk a $20. She allowed for a 3 p.m. check out which helped a lot because our flight out was late afternoon.

No Dice For Anon at MGM Grand...

Checked in on Thursday afternoon at approximately 4:00PM. Front Desk was not busy. She asked for DL and gave it to her. I then asked if there were any comp upgrades available with a $20 showing under my CC. Don't know if she saw it or not, but she seemed like she already made up her mind as soon as we asked about the upgrade. Stayed for 4 nights and Saturday was apparently all sold-out, which may have had something to do with it.

No Dice For Aaron at MGM Grand...

Gave my credit card and drivers license and put a $20 on the counter and asked if there were any comp upgrades available. She didnt even think about it, and said no, the hotel was full. I checked prior if there was any big conventions going on an there wasnt. I also check in on a Sunday afternoon staying for the weekdays. This is the 3rd time within a year that I have been denied. Dont think MGM is allowing this anymore.

No Dice For JASON at MGM Grand...

Did the trick, and the staff member pushed the $20 aside, and offered an upgrade for $29 to a spa room. I later heard that all of the regular rooms were full and everyone who came late got upgraded... and she didn't give me back the $20 either.

No Dice For "James" at MGM Grand...

Did the usual, handed the clerk 'the sandwich' and asked about any complimentary upgrades and she replied "let me see what I can find" so she knew the drill. She offered me a West Wing King room but I politely declined. While the West Wing rooms are nice (I've stayed in one before) they are not really much of an upgrade from the standard rooms. She then said "sorry I couldn't do better" and gave me back my 20. I thanked her kindly for trying.

No Dice For "James" at MGM Grand...

Did the usual. Handed the clerk the 'sandwich' and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She then replied "Let me check and see" so she knew the drill. Then she said that the best that she could give me was a West Wing King Room which I politely declined. I've stayed in one of the West Wing Rooms before and it is not really that much of an upgrade. I thanked her kindly for trying and she gave me back my $20.

Jackpot! Dee Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

Found a girl with her hair, nails, and makeup done that looked like she could use the money. Got the upgrade and some extra free perks. She did everything she could to accomodate me. She hid the money when a supervisor walked by.

No Dice For Steve at MGM Grand...

Tried the sandwhich for the first time but had no luck. Was told that all the suites were booked but she said she might be able to get me a "Strip view" room. When typing it in, she told me, "Oops. Someone else beat me to it." So I ended up in my original king, no smoking room as booked. Got my money back and will try again next time.

No Dice For Spanky at MGM Grand...

Placed the twenty on the counter along with my license and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. The guy immediately said "we don't have any upgrades, complimentary or otherwise." Understanding enough, seeing how it was July 4. I think it's piss poor to offer gratuity and then re-grab it put it back in your wallet, so I told him I'd give it to him anyway. Since we were getting along OK I struck up a chat and asked him if on a slower day he ever had control over upgrades. He said it was entirely manager discretion. Of course, he'd be stupid not to say that even if it wasn't true. I'll try again next time.

Checked in at airport. Gave the clerk the sandwich and requested a complimentary upgrade. She immediately handed back the $20 and said that the hotel was full (which I did see on the website) but that she would give us a high floor with a view of the strip, which she did. Not really an upgrade, though.

No Dice For hatteras52 at MGM Grand...

I initially checked in at the airport, but had time to try at the hotel to change my room.

Experiences at the airport and hotel were similar in result. Both agents put the tip in plain site on the top counter. They both did offer a West Wing room but from it's location in the hotel and smaller size, I declined. Originally, I was told by both that it was because the hotel was full during part of my stay.

After checking in at the airport, when I got to the hotel there were no lines at registration, so I decided to try to see if I could get a better room. I had a lot more time with the agent at the hotel, who was extremely courteous and professional. After polite conversation and checking with their manager, it sounded like they had a Bungalow suite for me for 3 of the 4 nights. My departure date was flexible, so I agreed to shorten my stay to take advantage of this availability, but when the agent went to confirm matters with the manager, I was told they couldn't let it go thru because my reservation was thru casino marketing. I was there this past August also with a reservation thru marketing and had no trouble getting upgraded. The circumstances seemed identical, as one of those nights the hotel was supposedly fully booked. On this trip, I wound up with a 25th floor standard room with a view of the strip. I tipped the hotel agent who spent around 20 minutes trying to help me.

Jackpot! Ricks48038 Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

was checking in Sunday May 25th, the night after the UFC fights, and that night had Robin Williams at the hotel. Gave clerk sandwich, and he kept going back and forth on his screen. After more than five minutes, he finally addressed it, asking "is this for me", I said "yes" and nothing more. He replied "I thought so...I just checked, and all suites are fully booked as of now, but come back Monday morning and I'll have something nice for you." We were spending three nights there, so it wasn't a problem, and the room was definitely a nice upgrade for only $20. Wasn't West Wing, but no complaints.

No Dice For Ronnie at MGM Grand...

Gave the woman 20 bucks, she quickly took it without a thought. She did look for an upgrade, but said there were none available. She claimed she moved us to a room with a good view, and it was. I cannot verify if we would have had the exact same room without the tip, but like all things in Vegas, it was a gamble.

No Dice For kozma at MGM Grand...

Check in clerk gave us a very false smile as we approached the desk. Handed him the sandwich and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. He said there was nothing complimentary, but we could have a Bungalow Suite for an extra $40 a night which we declined.

He laters said we could have a West Wing room, but we declined that also as I had read that they are a lot smaller than the Grand Tower rooms.

We didn't get an upgrade and he kept the $20 which made me smile.

Jackpot! RedFalcon Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

Checked in at about 5pm on a Sunday, married couple 40ish Y/O. Room was booked directly through MGM using an online coupon code (about $50 off per night). Slipped the $20 with ID and such, but didn't say anything. Clerk typed for a while and upgraded us to a Bungalow King Suite (entry level suite).

Jackpot! Ken Got A MGM Grand Room Upgrade

Checked in about 5pm, with $20 'sandwiched'. Was friendly but didn't ask for any specific upgrade. Was told 'you booked this room (showing on a flip chart) and we're going to put you in this room (flipped to suite)'. Card key, smiles and end of transaction. I suspect it's all about timing (not when their busy), clerk selection and attitude.
