Saved:  $A few hundred Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  One Bedroom Balcony Suite  from  One Bedroom Balcony Suite

Method:
I wasn’t targeting anyone specific in the situation. I got to the desk, I said, “hi!, I’m checking in (big smile).” He asked for my ID. “Here’s my ID and credit card (slid it over to him), and this is for you, (slid a $20 bill folded in half) anything you can do for me I would really appreciate it (big smile).”

What I booked: Regular one bedroom balcony suite

Upgrades:
1. UPPER Penthouse Suite
2. Strip View
3. Early 11am Check in
4. $75 in Food/Beverage credit at MGM.

Value: Early check-in alone was $75. I’m going to guess total value was close to $500.

Strategy: Don’t be sneaky or sly about it. Have the attitude of, Yes, this $20 is for you no matter what you can do for me. Create a conversation where you can relate to each other. Ours was how he wanted to switch careers to the tech industry and I had just made that switch.

Saved:  $100 Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Balcony Deluxe Suite  from  Unsure

We checked in and presented the $20 between the ID and CC. The clerk knew exactly what we were asking for. She said “let me check first if I can upgrade you”. Our party had 2 rooms booked together. Initially they were going to be together on the 9th floor. I asked if its possible for a complimentary upgrade to a Higher floor with a balcony. She researched and said it would not be possible to keep the party in the same tower – since they had a single Deluxe Balcony Suite left in Tower 2 & 3. We gladly took her up! We had 32 Ph and 36 Ph floors with balconies and beautiful views. Amazing value for $20.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Upper Penthouse Balcony Suite w/ Strip view  from  Suite

Clerk was a young man. Time of day was about 4:30pm. Lobby was not busy. Slipped him the $20 and asked if they had anything available really high up with a view of the strip.

Tipped:  $40 Upgraded to  one bedroom suite, balcony, strip view  from  standard

stayed at MGM Signature for 4 nights,so I decided to try with $40 (20 might have looked mean for 4 nights). the girl at desk at first said that she could not upgrade as our room was already allocated. I still had my cc,id and tip in my hand,so i said thats a pity and went to take it back. As I did she said to hold on and started punching the keyboard and hey presto! a room became available. She said she couldn’t give it until the morning but 10 minutes after we got to our room she called to say that it was ready. We had been travelling for nearly 24 hours(Europe) and it was our 20th anniversary, which I mentioned when trying to negotiate. It seemed to help. Also there was a gift of Champagne and strawberries dipped in chocolate when we got to the Suite. The room was great, probably worth 10 times the $40 tip for 4 nights. BE sure to mention the anniversary

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Single Bedroom Suite  from  Single Bedroom Suite

Checked in around 4.. had the $20 sandwich ready… gave it to Erik.. he smiled and saw the 20 then gave it back to me… then i told him he could keep it and he said thank you… he began checking me in and then i asked if there were any available upgrades.. he looked and said none were really available he could looks for a high room and he gave me an option for strip view on the 15th or semi strip/airport view on the 35th.. i took the 35th… i flashed him another 20 that i had and asked if he could give me the 2 bedroom and he said that he couldnt.. SO overall i think I would of have gotten the same room without the 20.. and he kept it bc im pretty sure he didnt know what was up… Fail in my book… I did ask him for some club passes and he gave me some buy one get one free coupons for some poolside bar and 2 passes to XS… PSH!!!.. Don’t bother here…

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  No upgrade  from  Junior Suite

Failed….I asked for a comp upgrade. Clerk(Male) handed me the $20 back and said “nice try”. Not only did I fail, but was given a room without a balcony as requested when booking even though I had written confirmation No housekeeping for 3 days. Ran out of towels and TP on the second day. Went to registration and they said they could do nothing about it since our room was separately owned…Beware of this Hotel..It has a high rating but they have many separate owners with different policies.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Junior Suite, high floor  from  Junior Suite

My first time trying this – The $20 was in between the CC and the license. I mentioned that it was my girlfriend’s birthday and asked what kind of room we were getting and that it would be great if it had a strip view. We got a room on almost the highest floor possible with a decent strip view. Now – whether to say this was upgrade or not is hard to say. I was hoping for the “one bedroom” suite. I would say overall it was a success since I got what I asked for, and I didn’t get a room on the 2nd floor with a view of the monorail. Oh, and don’t take your eyes off of your bags for one second, even at The Signature people will steal anything (one bag was taken from me).

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  n/a  from  Junior Suite

Tried the $20 sandwich. The guy took the money, but then said he couldn’t upgrade me because something special was already in our room. It was a free box of chocolates to congratulate us on our anniversary. Oh well.

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Studio w/balcony, 36th floor, view of the strip  from  Studio

Seeing as the place was $259 a nite, I figured $50 for 4 nites would be the right amount to tip. Didnt get a room upgrade (1 bedrooms are actaully smaller so thats ok). I asked if there is a chance of an upgrade and she saw the $50 and said “let me see, yup sure.”. Got the 3rd to top floor (36/38), view of the strip (as opposed to view of the airport) and a room with a balcony. Well worth the cost of $50 IMHO.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Jr Suite w/ strip view on 28th floor  from  Jr Suite

Had us down for an 8th floor rm, w/ rear view. The clerk spent about 10-15 mins trying to find us a room, and asked if 28th floor was OK, I snapped his hand off. Room was fantastic
