Jackpot! Gavin Got A Mandalay Bay Room Upgrade

Checked in Thursday evening walked up to young lady working front desk. She was very friendly. Upon giving the sandwich she quickly took my $20 and put it in her pocket and then typed frantically to get me an upgrade. Given it was a holiday weekend nothing was coming up unless I was willing to settle for two queen beds instead of one king. She told me to wait for a minute and talked to her manager, and told me no dice on getting a room at The hotel as it was booked for the weekend (darn!). I thanked her anyway for her trouble, she gave me back my $20, but she asked me if i'd be willing to take a smoking room for a strip view but it'd have king bed in it. I said why not. Room had a very nice view of the strip (well airport considering how south strip Mandalay Bay is), and the room did not smell like smoke. I gave the front desk person $20 for her effort.

Checked in on a very busy Sunday (waited 20 minutes to valet park), 3 rooms. Very nice woman at the desk said they were full, and she could not upgrade our rooms. She returned the fifty, but did a nice job of accomodating my request for a high room with a view North, over top of the Luxor. She also gave my parents and my grandmother adjoining rooms on a different floor, with a view of the pool. Mom was way too particular, IMO, insisting on adjoining rooms with my grandmother: that's why they ended-up with a pool view. I went ahead and tipped the woman $10 for putting up with all our requests and trying so hard to accomodate our "must haves" (high floor with a decent view for me, adjoining rooms for the others).

Very busy weekend, she said she couldn't upgrade us to share a 2 bedroom suite with our friends - but she was able to give us an adjoining room to our friends, and it worked out fine. She took the $20 and gave us some extra room keys for other friends so they could use the pool. Seemed comfortable with the experience - I would definitely try it again. thanks!

No line at checkin. Asked the nice girl if there were any upgrades. The hotel was pretty empty she said. She probably looked up my play and said we could have a suite on the 7th floor. Got the grand daddy Nick Papageorgio suite with 2 BRs 5 flat panel tvs and wetbar. We were in awe.

No Dice For at Mandalay Bay...

Had a couple of things going against me this weekend as I tried the trick. Of course I was checking in on a Friday afternoon over the MLK holiday weekend. When I got to the check-in, there was only one male (40-45 yrs) working at the counter. I sat back and scouted for a few minutes before I went for a younger female.
I made the small talk and handed her the sandwich as instructed. The $20 bill fell out on her counter in full site, but she made no attempt to pick it up or conceal it. I asked her if it would be possible to receive an upgraded room, but she told me that there were no suites available due to the holiday weekend. I expected this answer as I had checked on-line the night before. I told her that it was my wife's B-day (true) and inquired into the availability of the 750 GR room.
She left her counter and went back to speak with someone who appeared to be the manager. After a couple of minutes, she came back and began typing furiously into her computer. She did this for approx. 5 minutes before asking me if I could take 2 queen beds instead of the single king I had reserved.
I think that I may have screwed up here because I declined without asking for the type of room the queens would be in. She continued typing for another minute or so before telling me there was nothing she could do. She asked what I wanted to do about the money (which was still on the counter this whole time) and I told her she could keep it due to her efforts.
Though I failed, I think it was worth a shot.

Checked in during the afternoon, walked to the male clerk's line and did the sandwich.
He immediately recognized what was going on and after some time looking, offered us a suite in the new tower. Felt we could have done better if we waited, but since this was our first time at the Mandalay hotel, we accepted. For $20, it was definitely worth it.

Booked a special advertised w/complimentary upgrade to suite at check in (upon availability). Slipped the clerk a $20 as per the instructions, and asked if there was anything he could do to make it nice for us etc--- he went and asked something of the supervisor, and then came back and gave us the minimal uprade which we would have gotten for free anyway - to the 600 room, which is basically the same as a 550 but with a jacuzzi tub. oh and the room faced the airport and was on a very low floor, so we heard airplanes all night. Oh and the clerk kept the $20!

I tried the $20 trick exactly as described, picked a woman who who I thought would be helpful. She said she'd try to do a upgrade, but told me it was difficult because of the length of my stay. I checked in on a wednesday, I was checking out on the coming monday. I tried checking in at around noon, she said housekeeping hadn't cleaned most of the rooms. She said later things might open up. I gave her $20 for seeming to try. The next day I came back to see if any upgrades were available. I was there for a convention(the show was at Mandalay Bay), so I mentioned a complimentary upgrade might be nice if I have to take some prospects back to room to discuss business. Woman directing people tried to steer me towards someone who she thought would help me out *wink* The woman seemed very businesslike, said no-comp upgrades available, did the $20 trick, and she didn't seem to care. Asked for line passes, said no passes. I let her keep the $20, since she seemed to give me the evileye when I asked for the upgrade.

My husband and I were very polite and friendly as we checked in. We made small talk, "What a beautiful hotel," to establish contact with the male deskclerk. My husband asked if there were any comp upgrades (as he presented his CC/$20/DL) and the answer was, I can't give you a suite, because we are so closely watched, but I can give you a nicer room than you have, with a nice view.
We said thanks and he said thanks for the gratuity. We proceeded to our room to find a very large room, king bed, huge marble bath, but the best part was the view up the entire strip; esp at nighttime.

Agent himself noted: "You just gotta know who to talk to" and added, "Don't try this with women."
Also, I don't travel to Vegas on weekends and doubt that this process will work on a weekend when their is high volume and bumps in rack rates across the board.

No Dice For Pat at Mandalay Bay...

We checked in with an older woman named Nancy because there were no young men working at the check in desk. We handed her the $20 sandwich and she gave us a disgusted look when we asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. She said no and handed us the money back. We tried to remain friendly and asked if any buffet passes were available and by this time we felt really embarassed because she was getting very annoyed with us. We got no upgrades but she agreed to allow us to add a third person to the room with no extra charge. We requested a cot be sent up from housekeeping. The normal charge is $20 a night but we tipped the guy who delivered it $5 dollars and he gave us the cot for free. He informed us that we could get a free refrigerator delivered to our room if we needed to store any medications.

I am happy to say this $20 trick works very well. We were first told the hotel was sold out adn he could not give an upgrade or a top floor, but once he noticed the $20, he went to check with his manager (or so he said), and suddenly was able to upgrade us to a great suite and on the 29th floor. The $20 was very well spent! Overall a really great hotel.

Followed protocol. I presented CC, DL, and $20 per protocol. Clerk typed furiously, then discreetly stated "I will be able to do something for you." No more was said. When we opened our room door we were delighted at the Executive Suite upgrade. Thanks to this site and other posters, very helpful.

My wife and I scouted out the people at the front desk and found someone who was ideal, a 25-30 year-old male. I asked him if there were any complimentary upgrades and he stated he did not think so. I handed him the credit card and driver license with a $20 in the middle that was noticeably sticking out. When he saw this, he asked me to hold on for a minute. After some typing, he told me that for an additional $25 a night I could be upgraded to a suite at THE hotel which would have cost $110 a night. My wife and I gladly took the deal. The suite was amazing! I will definitely do this again next time we go back to Vegas!

I was scheptical at first but after checking in I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades and he pulled a "What?" So I asked him again . . . is there anything he can do for me to get a better room without paying a fee.
He took the money and placed it on his desk and searched the computer. Then he said the hotel was booked because I checked in too late. He went to the back to taqlk with the manager and soon came back and looked in the computer again. About 5 minutes later he said he could upgrade us to a suite at TheHotel . . . Mandalay Bay's 5-star newer hotel.
The room had a living room with a 40" plasma tv, a bedroom with a double queen like I needed, a minibar, and a HUGE bathroom with an LCD tv in there too!
Oh, and there is also a half bathroom in the living room portion. I was very pleased that $20 got me this upgrade for 5 days.
