We went to Vegas this week and I tried the sandwich trick. At first the clerk continued as usual not touching the 20$ bill. After she was finished typing she said you are upgraded to TheHotel 37th floor and you have two free breakfasts on your room. While we are heading to our room she sayed :" Sir, your change" I responed take it as a tip and she agreed. I will ALWAYS try the sandwich trick when I go to vegas!

We went to Vegas last week with our friends and I tried the sandwich trick. At first the clerk told us she could not upgrade us for free and that we were welcome to purchase a suite upgrade. I think she just said that for show, because then she said, "It looks like we've already upgraded you". She upgraded us AND our friends to suites at TheHotel. 20th floor overlooking the strip with rooms right next to each other. I will ALWAYS try the sandwich trick when I go to vegas!

Booked a weekend at Mandalay Bay, was a little nervous as i have not stayed at the basic Mandalay Bay before, only the hotel which we love.We basicaly booked it so we could bring our kids to the cool beach and pool there.
Slipped the clerk the 20 and asked for any upgrades to suites , she instantly said "how about the hotel", i said definitely, and we got it, what a deal, the hotel costs much more than Mandalay Bay does on weekends in particular so we really were happy to stay there again as every room is a suite .

My wife and I checked in around 8pm and it was dead in the lobby. There were 3 or 4 clerks there and I went for the male. Nice young Asian man who immediately try to sell us an upgrade to a Suite for $20/night. I declined, then made some small talk and told him it was our 15th anniversary(which was true). I then handed him the "upgrade sandwich". He looked around to make sure his manager wasnt around and then click, we had our upgrade. We went from the 7th floor overlooking pool to 34th floor suite overlooking the Strip....THANKS FOR THE ADVICE!!

Checked in early (about 11:30 am) and it was not too busy with about 10 clerks working. I looked for a young male clerk and found only one, though he was right in the middle in front of the manager. I waited in his line and luckily didn't get called to another line.
I gave him the $20 sandwich and asked for the complimentary upgrade. He said they couldn't do those anymore. As I looked up, I saw him doing some exaggerated winking as he said this. He said that he apologized for me having to wait to check in and he'd see what he could do. He got us a Spa Suite, which was a nice bonus.

No Dice For Richard at Mandalay Bay...

The hotel was dead, casino was empty and the restaurants dead. I checked in right away with a late 20's early 30's girl who saw the tip and when I asked said ther was nothing bus would see what she could do. I told her it was our anniversey. She turned around, did nothing and said there were no upgrades and was extremely condescending. If fact, the room was by the airport so yeah, not much s;eeping in for my vacation. Also booked a package deal with credit and half price show tickets. The telephone reservation lady knew it and said what the package was, upon check-in they refused the credit or the 2 for 1 show tickets. Mandalay Bay promos are not honest.

I booked the Mandalay promo; stay two nights get one for free. I checked in at 10:30pm and it was very quiet, no waiting. Was lookied after by a very good and friendly front desk woman somewhat under 30. I was friendly and excited about being back in Vegas and I guess she caught the bug because when I asked about complimentary upgrade she was very accomodating went into the back room and came out with a suite in The hotel with a strip view. The twenty dollar tip was accepted graciously and all went well. The suite was fantastic, all for a total cost of $60 per night. I went down to the casino floor after visiting the room and hit a 200 payout on a slot machine and that was just the beginning of a great weeks holiday.

No Dice For Tony C at Mandalay Bay...

The front counter was manned by all females when we checked in. Got a particularly cheery Asian lady who did not appear to be new. Made small-talk, she read the hotel's notes about us being 7 months pregnant and congratulated us. I thanked her, gave her the sandwich and asked if there might be any complimentary upgrade to their 600 Spa Suite or a Strip View room.
She typed typed a lot...went to the back and came out with upgrades...but for face value. We politely declined. She kept the $20. Unsure of if I'll try that again. I'm a big fan of tipping in general, but $20 for no "service" is quite a bit.

The whole check-in counter was operated by women, so I chose someone cheery looking without the "just started" look. She was a very young and small Asian lady, and we made small talk. She noticed my wife was pregnant, congratulated us, at which time I thanked her, gave her the sandwich, and asked if they had any upgrades available to a room with a jetted tub. She typed frantically and checked, then went back to the back. When she came out, she had upgrades, but all were for regular price. I thanked her and declined, and we got the same room we paid for, which was still very nice. The only downside is that she kept the $20.

We handed our CC-$20-ID to a woman, and she immediately knew what to do. She started typing us away and gave us an option of a suite with pool view or mountain view. We decided to get the pool view. We got upgraded from a standard room to a suite on the 13th floor of Mandalay Bay. I also asked for extra room keys, and she was nice enough to give it without extra charge. She thanked us for the $20 tip. The suite was awesome. It comes with a jacuzzi and LCD screen in the bathroom, with very nice pool view.

No Dice For at Mandalay Bay...

Checked in with a female clerk that seemed friendly. Started chatting and gave her the 20 between the drivers license and credit card. I asked for an upgrade which she seemed to ingnore and started telling us about the great view we would get. She was friendly and offered use day spa passes, which we used and loved. These were actually worth $60 so we did come out ahead, but not with a better room. I should have asked for the upgrade again, since she never really acknowledged that we asked for one. I will try this trick again next time I go to Vegas.

We arrived at the hotel in the early evening and there were no lines at the desk. Before approaching the desk I folded a $20 bill in between my ID and credit card. After the initial greeting she asked for my ID and credit card and I slipped them to her with the $20 bill and asked her if we could get a complimentary room upgrade. Her eyes lit up when she saw the bill and she slipped the bill under the shelf to hide it from others and she said she would see what she could do. She looked through the system for quite some time but also explained that while there were some nicer upgrade rooms available for that night and the next night (we were checking in on a Wednesday night and staying until Sunday) the nicer rooms were booked for the weekend... in fact they were overbooked by 7 rooms! She did go back and talk to her supervisor at least two times seeing if she could come up with something nice for us. In the end, all she could do was to find us a room on the 14th floor with a strip view which we really loved. She also suggested that we contact her the next day and she would see if conditions changed and if she could find us a nicer room she would. The next day we had a voice message on our phone saying to call the front desk. They informed us that the best thing they could find was a similar room on a higher floor but in all honesty they said the room we currently had probably had a better view. We apprciated our clerks efforts and loved the room and view we got and I'm sure it was because of offering her the tip, which we let her keep, even though we really didn't get an upgrade. We could tell she bent over backwards in trying to accomodate our request.

Waited an inordinate amount of time for check-in, kept a happy face with a very professional looking young clerk. Tried to chat, she wasn't having any of it - it was as if she were trying to hurry through our check-in, which was odd because everyone else was taking a long time...maybe she was trying to get moving. Anyway, sandwiched the $20, barely got "we're on our yearly vacation away from the kids, and anything you can do to help us out.." when she uncovered the $20 and put it out on the counter. "You can hold on to this" she said, then "I have a partial strip view and a pool view, or a mountain view." Our take was this wasn't an offer, just what was available. We said, "the view doesn't really matter" and she quickly printed one out, shoved it at us, and said "enjoy your stay." She wasn't rude at all, just as if she had been ultra-trained to act professionally in this situation. I tried to think of a reason to give her the money, but she didn't even pretend she was trying to hook us up, and apparantly didn't want it, so I slowly put it back in my wallet. The room was fine, nothing we didn't expect though. If she had typed for awhile, or even looked like she was trying, she could've made the 20, but not a thing. Personally batting 50/50 with this technique. Maybe $100 would have thawed the ice queen? Maybe not.

My boyfriend and I checked in at around 6:00pm with the sandwich trick and asked for the complimentary upgrade. The female clerk politely told us they are fully booked and couldn't do that and returned the $20. She then stepped aside and we thought she went to get some print out. It took her about 5 mins to come back and told us she will upgrade us to the strip view room on 62nd floor at TheHotel. We were happily accept the upgrade and tipped her back the $20. However, our room was right next to the suite with bunch of people party in their room and our room was located one floor below the Mix Lounge, where we could even hear and feel the music from upstairs. We called to complain about the noise and they said they did not have any extra rooms to relocate us, the manager promised us he will have our room change the next day. We got moved to THESuite on 29th floor the next night and we finally got a peaceful night. THESuite is nicer than the room we got the first night, which was not even a suite in the first place.
