Booked on a package of two nights for $115 (plus 6 free buffets). At check-in did the trick with a 20 and asked for a suite. He keyed for about 3 minutes then told me that due to the fact that I had a package he couldn't upgrade me to a suite. He passed back the 20. He told me I will have the best renovated room they have and processed my credit card info. Then he said, "let me check on something" and left for at least 10 minutes. He came back and told me he spoke to his supervisor and got me a suite. Two great rooms linked by a closet hallway and those connecting room doors. As during the 10 minutes I had packed away my wallet, I only had a ten in my pocket, which I happily gave him.

Checked in at 3 PM on a Saturday. Lobby was not busy, but the Specialty Equipment Market Association convention was in town, so hotels were generally busy. I had booked a 2-night stay through a mailer from the Hilton. Gave the older male desk clerk the "sandwich" and he immediately thanked me, slipped the $20 in his pocket and went to work. After a couple minutes he went into the back room and came back with my upgrade to a redesigned "superior" room with a view of the strip on the 10th floor. The The Superior rooms are typically about $50 more than the classic rooms, and have new plasma TVs, upgraded bedding, and a very nice, masculine decor. Overall, a decent value for 2 nights. He once again thanked me profusely and shook my hand as I headed to the elevators. The $20 trick worked again!

Put 20 between credit card and ID clerk took it without saying anything and then informed us of what was available. She was very friendly and personable about 25 with blonde hair and glasses. We got a Mini Suite on the 25th floor in the East Tower overlooking the pool with a great view of the mountains.

Put the twenty between credit card and ID and asked the clerk if there were any upgrades. She took my ID and credit card without saying anything and then said she had a newly renovated room that was a little larger than what we had booked. Well it turned out to be a Mini Suite on the 25th floor of the East Tower with a beutiful view of the pool, the mountains and the airport.

The way the queuing system was laid out meant that you couldn't target a specific check in person but as it happened we got a friendly lady who was working at the far end of the desk. I put the $20 between my credit card and drivers license and handed it to her. She immediately saw what I had done and I didn't even see her remove the $20 so she must have been a bit of a pro. I started the "Do you have any free upgrades" talk but she just started nodding as if to say she understood what I wanted and to be quite so no one else heard! She asked what we were looking for suggesting a king bed and I said that would be great particularly if it had a view. She gave us one of the newly renovated rooms on a high floor looking out to the front of the hotel. I think this should have been about $50 a night more so for our 5 night stay saved us a fair bit! She also went to quite a bit of effort moving around a number of other bookings to make the room available for our whole stay. I think she appreciated the money and we certainly appreciated the extra comfort!

We had a reservartion two standard rooms at $95 for 10 nights for the bridge tournament. Luckily we arrived at a quiet time at check-in. Gave my credit card with $20 under it, and asked for complimentary upgrades and did some small talk. Receptionist Ria (45-50) was very helpful. Told her we would have some meetings (read party) for 12 people and that it would be great if we could get a suite for that. She found us a great 1200 sqft East Tower suite, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms with jacuzzi, a bar and a guest rest room. Great. She even told us to check the suite out first, and return if we didn't like it! Easily the best spent $20 this year.

Success-Failure-Success
My Mom and I spent 4 nights at the LV Hilton with 4 1-night reservations (Mom Friday and Sunday, me Saturday and Monday). Mom checked in on Friday while I was dealing with the Valet, and the young man checking her in was extremely enthusiastic in accepting her $20, and gave us Lanai suite 342. I was a bit dissappointed when he said this since I had stayed in a Lanai suite a few years ago and they were very dated, but once we got in the room we found that they had made quite a few updates, including a neat overhead rain showerhead, and a 42" flatscreen in the livingroom section of the room.
Saturday morning we both walked up to the desk, and I handed the girl my cards along with $10, and said "My Mom is checking out and I am checking in right now, and we were wondering if we could just stay in the same room". The girl said "Oh, no. The reason you got this $300 room was that there were not any regular rooms available. But I can give you an upgraded room in the east tower". I went ahead and took it, and we moved our stuff up to what was really just a regular room with a down comforter on the bed and a flatscreen tv.
Sunday morning we decided to actually pack our stuff and throw it in the car, then check back in that evening. Mom once again was successful in getting us a Lanai suite - 346 this time. We arrived in the room and found it was at least 80F in there. We set the air to max cool and cranked the fan, then went and played for a few hours. Upon getting back in the room we found it was not any cooler, so we walked back down to the desk, and the same girl that had checked Mom in apologized and moved us to Lanai suite 341. We were quite happy with this room, although the blowdryer is broken in there.
Monday morning we did the "Mom is checking out-I am checking in - same room?" thing without a tip and were successful.
All in all, we were quite happy with our $20 tricks at the LV Hilton!

No Dice For at Las Vegas Hilton...
|
|
| |
|
It was a busy day that about 5 clerks working at the front desk. i checked in around 1pm, and i slipped a $20 bill sandwiches when a clerk asked for my ID. I asked if i could have complimentary upgrade before she looked at the sandwiches, she said no. After she saw it, she said they didn't do that thing and returned the $20 dollar bill to me. However, a few minutes later typing on the computer, she told me that she could upgrade a renovated room for me. So i tip her $5 for the great help.
It's a very nice room with a big plasma TV, a jacuzzi tub, and a very comfortable big bed.

I was all excited to try this and then the clerk had to ruin it for me by upgrading us without us having to ask. We were just really nice to her and it worked. I gave her five bucks anyway. Good room with big TV and great bed and jacuzzi tub.

We arrived at the hotel around 1AM coming from CA. After scanning the front desk, there were three representatives working, two males and one female. I was hoping the female associate would help me out as she would know this program. The odds were against me and I got one of the two males. As advertised I slip a $20 in between my ID and credit card and it was a success. I guess there is no sex discrimination when it comes to Mr. Andrew Jackson.

My Mom and I each had a room reserved at the "tiny minnows" special rate of around $43 a night for 4 nights. We arrived at around 10:30pm, approached the Hilton HHonors check-in line together (we are both Diamond), and each handed her our credit cards and HHonors cards with the ole' $20 in between. We asked if we could get a comp upgrade, and after seeing the tip, she said "what would you like?" We asked if instead of getting 2 rooms, if we could get a 2-bedroom suite instead. She typed for a while, and told us that the system coming up with 2 2-bedrooms suites when she tried to combine us. She kept typing away, and after about 10 minutes and some help from the supervisor, she gave us 3 rooms at the end of the 19th floor in the East wing. When we arrived we found we had a regular 2-double bedroom that connected to a "courtesy suite" that was basically a full living room with a murphy bed. The third room was a junior-suite with a king bed just across the hall. Since my sister was joining us the next day, this was really a fantastic convenience have one bedroom for her (with her body clock set to California time), another for us (on Michigan time), and a living room to sit around an spend family time. All the rooms were upgraded to the flat screen TVs, and there was also a bathroom in the courtesy suite, so each of the us got our own bathroom.
I would only expect this good an upgrade during the slowest days of the year, but will definitely be trying the $20 trick again on future trips!

Reserve basic room though a package. Checked in at 10:30 am and slipped the 20 with the license and asked for any complimentary upgrades. She smiled and immediatly pocketed the money and assured me of something. She showed me my room and then the upgraded room in hte towers (fridge, plasma tv etc). She knew what was going on and checked me in early with the upgrade. Worked like a charm even though it was a football weekend with a convention.

Had reserved the standard room as we were attending a convention at the hotel. Arrived around 10 am well before the 3 pm checkin time. Put the $20 between my license and credit card and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades. Also mentioned to the clerk that my husband and I were celebrating our 5 year wedding anniversary (it was true!) and the clerk first said he wasn't sure anything was ready but quickly found us a great suite with a large comfortable king bed, wet bar, sunken living room, jacuzzi tub and separate shower. It was a great success!

I had a conference at the Hilton and had a standard room reserved for 4 nights, paid for by my company. My husband and I arrived at the Hilton around 11AM and figured we would try to check in even though check-in time wasn't until 3PM. The clerk asked if we would like to upgrade our room for an additional $50 a night. I declined. She then asked me for my license and credit card. I already had the $20 folded in between them and handed it to the clerk. I then asked if she had any complimentary upgrades available. At first she said no, sorry..until she saw the $20 and then gave me a smile and told me she would see what she could do. She went to the back for a minute(which made me nervous) and then came back and was typing away trying to find us something. She was able to find us a renovated north tower room with the king size bed and plasma tv. She said the only room that was available at that time was on the 2nd floor. I didn't care and took it since we just wanted to get in the room already insted of waiting until 3PM. I couldn't believe it worked! The room was nice, had a fridge but dissapointed that there was no coffee maker. But, took the gamble and we really enjoyed the upgrades. Well worth the $20! Everyone should try it!

I walked up to the clerk, gave my name, and asked if there were any upgrades available. He said, "Yes, let me check." He started typing away and then asked for my ID. I slipped the $20 between DL, CC, and Hilton card and handed it over. He showed me a picture of the room that I had reserved and showed me a picture of what he could move me to. I said that was fine. I wonder, though, if I could've gotten a complimentary upgrade without the $20 since he had already said yes when I asked. I was too excited to try out the tipping trick that I didn't think straight.
