Got to the hotel...slid the 20 between my ID and card...asked for a complementary upgrade. Older gentlemen said "no complementary upgrades...we're completely booked" But he did offer a GO room for more $$$.. I really didnt expect it to work as it was fight night and everyone was there.

Checked in late in the afternoon, casually handed the clerk the $20 in between the two cards. I thought it was risky because he was training another clerk. He first offered me the executive which is not a go room. I asked if he could do a go room, he hesitated but I got the room after telling him it was my wife's birthday.

I slipped the twenty in between the CC and license and chatted up the clerk who was an older African-American woman. I knew the hotel was sold out for the weekend so I wasn't expecting anything great but I told her in a non-pushy way to "do what she could for us." She seemed to like that and gave us a Go-Room on the 24th floor for free Thursday and Friday night. Saturday and Sunday we had to pay an extra $50/night. She also told us she'd have something special in the room for us about an hour later. We ended up getting some wine along with a fruit platter and basket. I'm not sure if that was part of the room price or what. It was well worth it though because we had a strip view and partial view of the Bellagio Fountains.

Checked in Wednesday afternoon around 2:30PM, it was generally quite at check-in with about 6 to 7 clerks at the check-in counter, all busy when we arrived. We were next in line, and it would be the luck of the draw on who our clerk would be. I was sizing them up, debating in my head who I thought would give me the best odds at an upgrade, when all of a sudden... a clerk from check-out called me over.

I greeted the gentleman with a smile, gave him my name, and as soon as he asked for my ID, I handed it over with the 20 sticking out from underneath, and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. I then began some small talk, we chatted about the weather, a convention that was in town, some brief sports chat, all while he continued to type and type away.

He finished up the transaction, thanked me for my tip, and explained that he was able to get me a mini-suite! Well worth it!

When we arrived I greeted the clerk by her name and carried on a conversation. She asked me for my ID and CC, I then mentioned that I would love an upgrade and inquired about the go rooms, she stated that they were 40 per night extra, but offered us a strip view on 20. When we went up to the room it reaked of smoke, I went down to the front desk to switch rooms. The clerk went and spoke to her manager and got us upgraded to a go-room. Very nice....

I reserved a Deluxe King room and got upgraded to an Executive King room (which to my knowledge is the deluxe room +/- 100 sq ft.). The room was on the 27th floor, so the view was OK. The room overlooked the Imperial Palace with a direct view of the Mirage volcano.

I was a little nervous because the room also overlooked Harrah's Carnival Court. Surprisingly, it wasn't overly noisy.

All in all, I've gotten a bigger "deluxe" room without using the $20 trick. However, I will still consider this a successful first attempt.

Was very personable with the clerk while checking in and telling her my name to look up the reservation. When she asked for ID and credit card, I asked about complimentary upgrades while handing her the card with 20 dollars under it; she saw the 20, but said that because it was a 5 night stay she couldn't upgrade me for no cost. She did say that if it was a shorter stay she would have been able to. In any case, I kept the twenty, and then she attempted to upsell me to the go-rooms, for $25/night for a regular go-room and $40/night for their junior executives (the go-room but with an extra 60 sq ft. or so). Their regular rates for upselling ar $40 and $60 or so, but they were having a hotel-wide promo for people checking in that day, so the tip/being nice and personable didn't really affect this one.

So... didn't lose my 20, and the clerk was very polite, so no big loss, but no success either.

We'd reserved the room online. I slipped the 20 between driver's license and credit card, and asked about complimentary upgrades. The front desk person looked at this and was totally wise to what was going on. She asked what kind of upgrade we wanted, and I just said something nice (I highly recommend being specific--if you want something bigger, say so; if you want a nice view, say so). We ended up with the same room as we reserved, but on the 21st floor overlooking the Strip. It was an excellent view, and my girlfriend was happy. Unfortunately, she wasn't happy about the urine on the floor of the not-to-clean bathroom and I wasn't happy about the construction in the next room starting at 8 AM each morning we were there.

Checked in at 11 AM. Slipped 20$ between CC and ID. He explained kindly, the Go-Rooms were a 50$ extra per night. But he'd give me a room on the Top floor with a view and some extra space close to the corner. Took it.

Thought it would work, especially since it was at a dead time. Went through the recommended procedure: slipped a $20 between the CC and ID and asked if there were complimentary upgrades. I thought the receptionist would be cool but she said something like, "Um.. let me see... no, but I can get you a room with a view of Caesars." So I said, "Oh okay. Thanks." and took the $20 back.

When she was printing out the paperwork, though, she said, "Complimentary upgrades..." under her breath as if she was a newbie piecing together the $20 dollar bill and my request. Another clue that she was new: she forgot to give me the coupon book that was part of the package so I had to return to the front desk pick it up. I should've picked a better receptionist.

This actually works! Checked in Tuesday afternoon at around 3pm, a few people in line. Went to the clerk and made some small talk, using personalization (name, etc) general rapport building. Asked for complimentary upgrade if possible, she replied they were pretty booked since a few conventions were in town, I asked her to see what she could do for me - flashing the $20 under the cc and passing it over. She immediately knew what was up, and then made some calls, and I was upgraded from a standard room on the 9th floor looking at the garage to a 17th floor room with a Bellagio fountain strip view. All it took was the $20 and being friendly at the counter. Very happy that I found out about this prior to going to Vegas!

It failed at the Flamingo Airport checkin.

I had a comped room (which didn't seem to make a difference) checked in at 9PM and the Check-in lady (Mid 30's) typed away for a solid 5 minutes after I had flashed the $20 at her. She talked through the different choices (L something, executive rooms, etc etc) and all were full up. Ended up thanking her and kept my 20

We stayed at the Flamingo a couple of weeks ago. Tried the $20 trick at the airport check-in. The guy behind the desk eye's lit up when he saw the $20 under my credit card. I asked if he had any complimentary upgrades available. He looked on his computer for a good 5 minutes and said it was a really busy weekend(World Series of Poker, big fight going on) so I said I would be happy with a nice view. We ended up with a deluxe room towards the top with an awesome view of the strip and Bellagio fountains. Totally worth it in my opinion! Another couple with us, tried the $20 trick at the Bellagio front desk with no luck.

I'm in Vegas now(second time in a month), stayed at the Rio, then moved to the Flamingo and here's what happened:

As I approached check-in, I noticed someone observing my hotel clerk. I thought it might be a supervisor, so I was reluctant to pass the $20 bill. She was standing about 3 feet behind her so I decided I better not.

I was upbeat and very friendly (took much effort, ask my wife) and asked her how her day was. She then told me she was putting me in a suite, but I had to make sure I didn't have a late checkout. She said the suite was in the Masquerade Tower and it was 1600 sf! When I got to the room, I noticed the suite had a dining room, living room, huge bedroom, and jacuzzi tub, it encompassed the entire east side of the building, facing the strip. When I went to get ice, some 20-something young man was bragging to me about how he got comped a free room. I asked him if it was a suite, he said yes (all rooms are suites in the Rio). I asked if he got a REAL Suite. I then led him to my room and had to pick up his jaw as it hit the floor. He asked if I was a REAL high roller. I told him the Rio always gives me this suite, and I was playing in the World Series of Poker (I wish!).

Anyways, the next day I went to the Flamingo. Once again I was my chatty self (not). When I handed her my credit card with the folded $20, I asked about the possibility of an upgrade. She asked me what kind of room I wanted. I told her it was her call. She then mentioned she would put me in a mini-suite. After my Rio-suite/"target="_blank">Rio Suite, this mini-suite wasn't too comparable. It had a little living room and a separate bedroom. Definitely worth the $20, the hotel clerk seemed very grateful and thanked me twice for the tip.

We went up to the counter and slipped a $20 under the credit card and asked if they had any complimentary upgrades available and they gave us a strip view and a garden view since we had 2 rooms, which it says is worth $20 more a night but even though it wasnt that great of an upgrade we would do it again because its only $20 and we might have more luck next time, by the way we stayed at Flamingo at june 13th-june16th and checked in at the airport

I wait in line and I am directed to goto a young lady. I put the $20 under the credit card and while handing it to her I ask if there are any upgrades available. She feels the $20 and gets totally confused, she places my folded twenty back on the table. She mentions its her forth day working, clearly she doesn't feel comfortable yet. I mention that its my girlfriends birthday (it was) and she goes into the back and comes back after a few mintues and gave us a better room (19th Floor, pool view). So i guess it was still a positive experience, and it was free.
