I booked the cheapest room I could find for Friday and Saturday night. We didn't arrive until 1am in the morning as we drove in to town. I had my money sandwiched in between my card and I.D. ready. I handed it to him and asked if there were any complementary upgrades (I was really nervous). He saw the money immediately and smiled and said he'd check for me. It took several minutes and he had to check with another co-worker/supervisor. He said the only upgrade he had was a smoking room, but that tomorrow I could come back and change the room. I don't smoke, hate smoke, but graciously took it anyway. It was a widescreen room on the 13th floor on tower 2. It was great and didn't even smell of smoke so we stayed there our whole trip. I'm so excited and can't wait to use it again.

I handed the clerk the sandwich and she asked what the $20 was for and I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available, she was very flattered and appreciative but said they were all booked up and handed my $20 back. She began to check me in but I think she kept thinking about that $20 bill she almost had and asked a question to another employee walking by and then upgraded my room and said "Where's that 20?", LOL, I handed it to her, she seemed extremely happy that I had done that and said I had done everything right. She didn't ask me what kind of upgrade I was wanting and I didn't tell her (I was prepared to ask for a Widescreen, High Up, Strip View, Smoking) because I had thought we weren't going to get it anyway so I was just happy that it worked at all. Next time I will ask for specifically what I want. I was very nervous but it worked well and I won't be nervous about it next time.

Ask for complementary upgrade not sure if clerk saw the $40. She tried talking to managers not sure about what and why, figured this is not going to work out. Managers didnt give her any positive feedback and so she took the money and laid it on the counter by her keyboard and proceeded to find 3 widescreen good rooms in with view in the renovated Tower 2 and on the same floor. She did then asked her to change 1 room to smoking floor which she changed to room 13.

Checked in about 10am slipped the lady the 20 she asked me what i wanted i told her i wanted something up high with a strip view she gave me the Widscreen room overlooking New York New York and the MGM on the 28th Floor.

Had 4 standard rooms booked and did the sandwich tip to check in clerk, Jeff, real nice guy and he immediately upgraded all 4 rooms for me.

I was waited on by a very pleasant European woman. I slid the check in "Sandwich" across the desk and ask if there were any complimentary upgrade available. She said that she would see what she could do and then said that I could be upgraded to a Deluxe Renovated Room and showed me a picture of the room. I accepted and thanked her. She was very gracious, asked me if the money was for her and then thanked me. Staying for 5 nights, I could have booked the room that I ended up with for $30/night more when I made the reservations so I was very happy with the results

My suggestion to anyone trying this is to simply be pleasant to the front desk personnel and don't expect more than you deserve for a $20 tip.

Slipped the guy a 20. Didn't even have to ask. He asked me if a renovated strip view was OK. I asked him if it had the widescreen. He said yes. The rest is history.

No Dice For LBishop at Excalibur...

I tried out the $20 tip trick and I guess it sort of worked but not really. So I handed the lady (angry looking lady I believe she was asian, avoid her if possible) my id, credit card and $20 bill. I then asked if they had any complimentary upgrades as it was my girlfriends 21st birthday. She said she would look into it. She talked to the manager came back typed in some stuff and said they could upgrade us to a room with a view, no wide screen room, no jacuzzi room just a room with a view. Then she proceeded to say that they could upgrade us to a wide screen room for $20 a night or a jacuzzi room for $30. I ended up paying the extra for the jacuzzi room. Then after it was all said and done she asked whats the $20 for and she didnt even smile when I told it was for her. Oh well I will still try again if I ever go back

I followed the procedure exactly and it worked perfect. I asked if there were any complimentary upgrades right as she saw the $20 and she smiled and said "I think so..." She slipped the 20 under the keyboard as she tapped away. She told us about the room we would have gotten versus the upgraded room were were now going to get. Started off the trip on a high note and well worth it.

No Dice For Skiler at Excalibur...

This trip was for my fiance and me to get married. We also took our 5 year old daughter to be in the wedding. And like all little girls she wanted to stay in the castle. We usually stay at the Mirage. Upon checking in I used a $50 and told her we were there to get married and that my daughter looked so forward to staying in the castle. I asked about any complimentary upgrades and she said there was nothing she would do for me. Also she wouldn't let me check in using a debit card. I avoided credit due to being a true Dave Ramsey fan. I had to offer to leave a 2000.00 deposit to cover any phone calls we might make. Where am I gonna call that would cost 2000.00? Besides like most people we have cell phones. Needless to say I would never stay there again. The staff is very rude. Oh I did get my $50 back.
