Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  Unsure  from  Unsure

Approached the desk in the normal fashion with my ID, $50, CC. Asked if there were any upgrades available. Was immediately told that the tip was to be used after the stay. I asked if there were any upgrades available to which she said no. No harm no foul I guess – should have stayed at the Venetian instead

Saved:  $120 Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Unsure  from  Unsure

Checked in on a Sunday around noon so was a few hours early for the stated 3:00pm check in but had no problem getting the room early. Didn’t target a specific clerk but the one I dealt with was very friendly. Slid her a $20 after mentioning that it was our first anniversary (it actually was so no fibbing there) and I was upgraded from a Resort King to the Panoramic King thereby saving about $120. This was the only time in Las Vegas that my gamble paid off.

Tipped:  $50 Upgraded to  TowerSuite Resort  from  Resort King

There seems to be a ton of people saying the sandwich trick will not work at Wynn properties. This is definitely not the case! I checked in on a Sunday around 6 PM for a 4 night stay. My package was 1 night comped and 3 nights at casino rate ($149/night) in a standard Resort King room at Encore, set up though my executive host (I am a Red Card holder and definitely not a high roller). I handed the check in lady a $50 sandwich and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. She let the $50 fall on her monitor, where it stayed for the entire transaction. She said she would check and asked if I was celebrating anything special. I told her we were celebrating my wife’s birthday (which was actually a month away). The woman asked where my wife was and I said she was still in the parking garage (which was true – she was too embarrassed to be with me when I tried this trick). She also asked if I had any preferences. I said something high and with a nice view of the strip. I ended up with a Tower Suite King on the 54th floor. The view to the left was of the golf course, straight ahead was the Wynn, and to the right of that we could see down the strip. Looking straight down, we could see the two Encore pools. It was a fantastic view. Checking out the rates online, this was a $90 per night upgrade, so we saved $360 total!

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Panoramic Double Queen  from  Resort King

We arrived at about 7pm. There was somebody managing the line, so we couldn’t really target any particular agent. Luckily, we were given a nice femaie in her mid-20’s. I slipped her $40 between my AMEX and drivers license. She politely split the cards, and placed my money back on the counter and said she couldn’t take any money until AFTER we finished check in. I asked her if there were any complimentary upgrades, as we told her we were celebrating a Bachelor-Party week for a friend who’s getting married (we weren’t). She immediately upgraded us from a Resort King suite to a Panoramic Double Queen Suite on the 62nd floor (there are 63 floors in the Encore) with an amazing view of the Vegas Strip. This is normally a $50 upgrade per night (so a $150 upgrade in all because we were there 3 nights). I tried to give her the original $40, but she would only take $20. Since we were already comped one night in the suite through a Red Card mail offer, we essentially paid for 3 nights at the Panoramic Suite for less than what it would normally cost for only 1 night at a non-panoramic suite.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Resort Suite High Floor View  from  Resort Suite Non-View

I didn’t target a particular clerk, but mentioned a persons name who had given great service at the hotel. I slipped the $20 between my CC and DL and asked if there were any rooms with a view of the strip. Without hesitation he said “yes. most certainly”. The Wynn properties are great for upgrades, especially if you are nice to the staff and get to know them personally. This was the second time the sandwich worked.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  None  from  Resort Suite/Room

As usual, I folded my $20 into fourths, then held it out-of-sight under the credit card (instead of the ‘sandwich between the two cards’ approach). As usual, I don’t immediately say anything. The clerk said “Sorry we cant accept tips in the middle of a transaction.” Then she slid the bill aside onto the counter next to her keyboard.

I looked a bit perplexed so she then said “I can accept it later.” Then, later in the process, she asked me what kind of room I would prefer. I said “mountain view” (something most people don’t want) … “away in a corner where it’s quiet.” I did NOT ask for a higher floor room, that’s called panoramic and it’s a pricier room and an upgrade.

What I WAS VERY SUBTLY asking for was an upgrade to a costlier corner view room, where the room has windows on two sides. I figured a mountain view corner room on a lower floor was not such a stretch, checking in on a Tuesday.

She showed me a map of the 38th floor (not high enough to be a panoramic upgrade) and pointed out two rooms, NEAR the corners but not actually corner rooms. Hence I was not being offered any upgrade. Later, she asked if I wanted the tip back, but I declined. In 2009, I stayed on the Wynn side and there I also did not get an upgrade, but was handed my $20 back. Prior to that, I found the $20 tip DID get me upgrades at Wynn. Once it got me room 6035, that would be the top floor of the joint, what a view!

I think what has happened is that Wynn management has cracked down on the $20 tip trick in the case of guests arriving under promo codes yielding low rates (as I usually do), that front desk staff must explain whenever such guests are checked-in to any kind of room other than the most basic resort room. So if that’s you, just save your money.

Tipped:  $40 Upgraded to  didn't  from  basic

We got a comp room and it was memorial day weekend. we figured it was likely all the rooms were full but we wanted to take a chance anyhow so slipped the guy $40, and asked for upgrade for a suite. He took the money and then said he couldn’t do anything about it. We thought that was rude. We found out later that when a room is comp that they won’t upgrade you. We think this clerk knew that and took our money without blinking an eye.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  Panoramic View of Strip  from  King Resort

It was around 11:00 am got in line and was greeted by a lovely young lady. I laid the $20 down on the counter as I got my other cards out and asked if there was an option to upgrade. She said yes and quoted my the regular charges – $25 per night. I told her I wasn’t really interested in paying and she said “as long as we don’t use the word complimentary, we will be ok.” She then promptly found me a great rooom on the 51st floor, end of the hallway, overlooking the golf course and strip. After the transaction I gave her the 20 bucks, well worth it.

Tipped:  $20 Upgraded to  None  from  the regular suite

It was around 12:30 in the afternoon on a Sunday. Not too crowded, but the encore desk isnt exactly big. Each line had about 3 people. Decided to go with the young hispanic female in her early 20’s. (the alternative was a very old man in his 50s or 60s – figured the young girl would be a better shot)

Slid the 20 between the CC and ID. She saw the tip after she separated the cards. I asked her if there were any upgrades available. Immediately she said “Sorry we cant accept tips in the middle of a transaction” and handed it back to me. I would’ve given back to her at the end, but no upgrade, only gave me two room choices (both were lower floors and on a SUNDAY), didnt give me XS passes (she said the club was “too new” to give passes). Total fail.
