I was blown away . We checked in on Sunday Sept. 23rd for our 40th anniversary . We had already booked a deluxe lake front I thought I would try the $20.00 tip. I gave her my licence a twenty dollar bill and my credit card. I explained to her why we were in Vegas . I also asked her if there was a chance for an upgrade maybe even a suite. This very nice lady looked at her computer and then said she would be right back. I was a little nervous. We were going to be there for two days. Well she came back and said she was goiung to give us the Belligo suite but it did not face the strip. Then she floored me by saying that none of the suites that were avaialable faced the front or the strip. Well my wife looked very sad and I said we would keep the lake view room. Now here is the good part. Our lady then said with a smile 40 years huh ? How about if I put you two in our VIP suite that only a select few use. Iasked her what it was like and she smiled and said why do'nt you go see for youself.
We went up tp 15001 and walked right into heaven. For the next several minutes all we said was ALL MY GOD over and over again. First off it had a doorbell on the outside. Now as you went in it had an electronic DO NOT DISTURB sign. It was 1550 sq. ft. It had two full size bathrooms and two large tvs in the living room and a portable color tv in each bathroom. The living room had electronic drapes. The best part. As you opened the drapes the view took your breath away. You had a 90 degree view of the strip and the lake. Now straight across you was the Paris and to the left you could see as far down as the Imperial Palace. Now to the right you could see the M.G.M. Grand. Finally in each bathroom you had a 60 degree view of the strip. All for using the twenty dollar tip.

I did exactly the process explained here and it worked very well. The clerk was very friendly and gave me a few seconds after a wonderful lake view on a high floor.
For information (dunno if this makes any difference), I booked my stay using the Bellagio website.

I had originally booked a Deluxe room and was going to chance the Lakeview upgrade to the $20 trick, but as we got closer to the trip I realized that I really really really wanted a Lakeview Room, so I decided it was better to fork over the extra $50 per night ahead of time on my reservation to make sure I had it. I still wanted to try the $20 upon check-in just for the fun of it to see what else I could get. I imagined the next 'upgrade' would be to a suite, but what I got was a "newly renovated" Deluxe Lakeview w/2 Queen beds on Floor 30. I think the "newly renovated" was the upgrade that my $20 bought me. It was in fact a gorgeous room with new everything (carpet, furniture, flat-screen, bedding etc...) but I think I would've enjoyed a regular lakeview room just as much. When I realized the word "suite" wasn't in the clerk's description of the room (disappointed) I asked for Line Passes to the buffet which she gladly handed over. (my consolation prize).
When I got home from my trip I checked out the Bellagio website, and it looks like all of the suites are with King Beds only. Since I requested 2 Queens beds (3 people in room) it looks like I had a zero-shot of getting a suite to begin with. Looking at some of the other reports here, it appears that other non-room upgrades pple have gotten for the $20 are Bellagio parfum sets, and food comps. I didnt think to inquire about those at the time, but I was happy with the Line passes at least.

approach with a big smile at a nice young good looking guy. chit chat a bit about how beautiful the hotel was, etc. and handed my id and cc w/$50 bill sandwiched in between. asked him about complimentary upgrade to a better room. he clicked clicked away and said nothing is available, however, he can give me a corner spa tower room overlooking the strip. only thing is construction is right next to room in one corner. then i asked him again if that's the best he could do, he suggested another overlooking the pool but smoking room. after about 5 minutes without any better room, i took the spa tower (which i was entitled to free in the first place). i completely forgotten about the $50 bill because i didn't pay attention when and how the clerk pocketed the $50 bill. by the time i remembered the $50 bill, i was already walking away toward my room. turned around and the clerk was no where in sight. it was a very busy place with tons of people so i didn't try to find the guy to ask for the $50 back.
well the Bellagio room was really nice but for the $500/nite that i paid, it sure did not live up to it's name. overpriced and overrated. rude staff and not even a free bottle of water in room.

After reading the stories of others' successes, we decided to try a 100 dollar tip for several reasons. We were staying over labor day, at the Bellagio, and for 6 nights. If you do the math, that's under 20 dollars a day for the upgrade on a VERY busy holiday weekend. As recommended, I waited in line for the only young male at the check in area. Unfortunately (turned out to be fortunate) for me, his shift was up the customer in front of me so I went to the newly appointed female clerk. As I handed her my credit card, id and the $, I told her it was my birthday (it was) and I was wondering if there were any complimentary suite upgrades available. She must have noticed the 100 dollars right away becuase she said she would do her best and started typing away at the keyboard. Meanwhile, I didn't have high hopes because the customer next to me was arguing with his clerk because he wanted to BUY a suite upgrade and she was apologizing that they had no suites available and if she could she would upgrade him because she gets a 10% commision on the room. I patiently waited for my clerk to finish her typing and she calmly and quietly said she had found a suite with a fountain view for me in the new spa tower. She gave me buffet and cafe line passes for my husband & I and couple who weren't staying at the hotel but we were meeting for dinner. She told me she hoped I enjoyed my stay and thank you very much. Considering the crazy busy labor day weekend (which I will never go back to Vegas for) and the fact that we were upgraded for 6 nights, I would consider this a HUGE success. Thanks for the advice frontdesktip!!

Placed the $20 between DL and CC as usual, but didn't say a word. When the clerk noticed the $20, he looked up and asked "Were you hoping to get a Fountain View room?". I replied "that would be great". Got a room on the 12th floor with a view right in the middle of the fountain.

Arrived on a Saturday around 11 am. Told the very nice young lady that we were celebrating our 29th (true) and that anything she could do to make it more special for my wife would be appreciated. She spent quite some time on the computer without saying anything and I wondered if she had heard me. She finally said I can give you a choice of a junior suite corner room with a jacouzi or a fountain view room. Since we were dining at Prime the next night and had requested a window table, we decided on the suite. She then excused herself for a few minutes and came back with a coupon for a free gift (perfume) for my wife and a line pass for both the buffets and the coffee shop restaurant for our entire week's stay. The room was great and we enjoyed our week at Belagio. Great service.

Just like everyone said, I put the folded $20 b/w my cc & dl and asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. Without blinking, he said he was sure there was something he could do. Offered a non-smoking room with 2 queen beds on the 28th floor with a fountain view that was smack-dab in the middle of the fountain, so the view was perfect. Checked in at about 11am on Friday for a 3 night stay and it worked like a charm! Now that I've built up my confidence, next time I'll ask for a suite!

Planted the $20 ad explained it was our anniverssary. First we were told hhotel was booked. She checked with supervisor if anything was on the board. Again no luck so she returned the $20. Then as she puched in for our room snagged us a 9th floor fountain view right in front of Eiffel Tower. Returned the $20 and we also received the Bellagio perfum as a gift.
Thanks for all the info

arrived on 8/13 as a group of 8, 4 couples who all booked the same room. I read reviews on this site a few weeks before and decided I would try it. I was nervous and I was attempting different ways to place the 30 between the license and credit card while I was on the shuttle from the airport.
I found the shortest line since I was very antsy and just dying to try this. I walked up to the female clerk said good morning and told her I was here to check in. She asked for my ID and as quick as I handed her the "sandwich" the money was gone just as quick. She said thank you and I asked her about any comp upgrades, she replied "Yea i can do something for you, how bout a lakeview room?" She said it was normally 50 dollars more but she was gonna waive it for me.
I walked over to the rest of my party all happy and gloating and they couldnt believe that it worked. One of them even went back down a few minutes later and said they werent happy with their room and slipped the same girl a 20 and they got an upgrade as well.
I definitely suggest anyone going to vegas to try this, all you have to lose is 20 bucks.... the view was so worth 20 bucks for the week!

I checked in at about 2 pm on a Tuesday. Did the standard $20 between CC and DL and asked if they had any lake view rooms available. I also told her that if she could find me a suite, I would give her another $100. She said she would have put me in a suite, but due to a current upgrades on suites, very few are available. But she did put me on the 32nd floor (Room 32020 to be exact). It was basically just one room off from the center of the main tower. Perfect view of the lake and the strip. I wish a suite would have been open because I am sure she would have given it to me. The upgrades on the suites are supposed to take a couple of months from what I understand.

I had booked the Penthouse Suite in 9/2006 after Expedia must have made a mistake and had the suite at $236/night.
When I arrived, I gave the $40 with my license and CC and asked for a fountain view. She said they did not have any, but she would see what she could do. She upgraded me from the 1500 SQ FT Penthouse Suite to a 2500 SQ FT Executive Suite in the Spa tower, which has LCD TV's, etc. These are much newer and nice!! Well spent $40!

I did the old sandwich trick with the $20 bill and asked if there was a chance of a compimentary room upgrade. I made sure that only part of the bill was showing so that she knew that i was tipping her. she immediately took the credit card/ license sandwich and set it on the counter next to her and said "let me check for you". It was obvious that she saw the money by the way she placed the cards to cover up the money. She said that she did have a fountain view room on the 25th floor and would be happy to upgrade us at no charge. She then picked up the cards and put the $20 very quickly and discretely into her jacket pocket. Awesome view and an awesome room!!

Checked in on a Wednesday around 2:00 for two nights.....went with the $20 per night tip as a relative had tried just $20 the week before with mixed results. Put the money between my ID and CC and asked if they had any compimentary upgrades available. Clerk said "I am sure that we do"....played around on the computer for awhile and then offered me one of two rooms - a standard lake view room or the Tower Deluxe corner room. Even suggested I take the corner room and said to come back and see him if we were not happy. Also gave us a line pass for the buffet/cafe. Worked like a charm. Have asked for upgrades in the past with no tip and was always offered an upgrade with a extra charge ~ $60 per night. Definitely worth the $20 per night tip.

Gave the young male the clerk the $20 with credit card and ID. Ask about complimentary upgrade to Lakeview room. He replied that upgrades are always available so I knew we had picked the right guy, also when my dtr and son in law checked in a few days later we went right to the same clerk and he was able to put them on the same floor/view just a few doors down from us.

Checked in Saturday midday for 3-night stay. Reception area extremely busy, with long lines. Showed the clerk a $100 bill and asked, "I'd like to see if there are any suite upgrades available." She saw the bill, shook her head sadly and said no. I removed the $100 and replaced it with $40 and said, "Well, maybe there is something you can do to improve our room situation." She came back immediately with a renovated, lake view, non-smoking room on a high floor. She took the $40 with a smile and I felt she would have gotten me a suite if she'd been able to. Rack rate differential between what we booked and where was landed is about $60/night on Expedia, so we were super happy!

Best friend and I were there for a conference. We came in and looked for the most friendly clerk. Handed him the $20 between the credit card and id. He put it in his pocket as we asked if there were any complimentary upgrades available. He typed for a while, went to a phone, then came back. He had a big smile on his face and told us we would be very, very happy with the room. It was amazing. Huge corner room with a giant bathroom. It was a super busy week in Vegas, two large conventions going on. Every hotel was totally booked. We were thrilled that we were able to get an upgrade. One problem, we specifically said we needed two beds. The large corner room only had one king bed. The bellman, worth his weight in gold, had a cot sent up with no charge. It was just as comfortable as the regular bed.
